Argos Get Back on Track With Win At Shorter

UWF records fifth shutout of season

ROME, Ga. – The University of West Florida women's soccer team returned to its winning ways with a 4-0 victory at Shorter on Friday night, improving to 7-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Gulf South Conference.

The four goals came from four different players, and the Argonauts had seven shots, including what would ultimately be the game-winning goal from Leonie Kreil, in the first 21 minutes of play, which is when Shorter recorded its first shot of the game.

Kreil helped out on UWF's second goal as well, recording an assist on freshman Jessica Quixley's team-high fifth goal of the year in the 33rd minute. Kreil now has six assists in her sophomore season, a total that leads the GSC.

The second half was more of the same for UWF, and Shorter was held to just one shot in the final 45 minutes of play. Shantell Thompson scored unassisted in the 59th minute, and Robyn Herman got an assist from Hannah Wooten in the 86th minute for Herman's first goal of the year, putting the score at its final 4-0.

With her goal and assist, Kreil now holds the team lead with 12 points for the season. Friday marked the second three-point game of the season for the German national, after she had a goal and an assist at Alabama Huntsville in September.

The UWF defense made things easy for goalkeeper Katelyn Burkhart on Friday, allowing the Hawks to take just two shots – neither of which were on target. The senior picked up her 12th career shutout and earned 30th career win in goal for UWF, becoming just the fifth Argonaut to do so.

West Florida visits No. 24 Lee on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 5 pm ET start and was moved up due to the impending threat of Hurricane Nate.
