MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Jordyn Poppen matched her career-high with 19 kills, and Nadine Williams added a double-double with 10 kills and 20 digs to help the Argos win their 12th straight match 3-1 Saturday at Christian Brothers (9-11, 4-4 GSC). UWF (15-4, 7-0 GSC) also got 11 kills and eight blocks from Rachel Neblett to fuel an impressive comeback victory.
The Argos and Lady Bucs played a tight first set that saw the home team emerge with a 25-23 victory. Poppen got going early with six kills and one service ace, but CBU outhit the Argos .235 to .213 in the set and won despite six errors. The set was the first the Argos have dropped since September 22 at North Alabama.
UWF quickly rebounded in the second, building a 5-1 lead at the first CBU timeout. After the Lady Bucs tightened the score to 12-10, UWF took control with a match-altering 13-5 run to win 25-15. Williams and Neblett set the tone early in the set with a block to make it 1-0. Neblett finished with five kills and four blocks in the set. West Florida hit .400 in the second.
UWF and CBU played evenly to begin the third set, which stood tied at 15-15 before another resounding Argo run of 10-4 put it away at 25-19. Poppen picked up seven kills, and UWF stayed efficient, hitting .385 to go up 2-1.
In the fourth, the team turned in its best overall performance, hitting .480 and committing just one error on the way to a 25-11 closing victory. The team closed the set on a 20-6 run that proved to be one of its best stretches of the season. Caleigh Morrison had three kills plus two blocks in the finale. Taylor Hall added three blocks of her own.
The Argos committed just eight errors over the final three sets of the match vs. 21 for CBU. UWF finished with 16 blocks in the match to set a new season-high. Neblett was a part of eight blocks, and Hall was a part of six. Neblett hit .500 for the match, and Poppen hit .472. Monique StCyr led the Argos in assists with 44. Williams led the team with 20 digs. Logan Kael chipped in 15 digs.
UWF returns home Tuesday to face North Alabama (16-3, 6-1 GSC) in the UWF Field House at 5:00 pm. The Argos previously defeated North Alabama 3-1 September 22 in Florence.
