* UWF continues its 3-game homestand with a non-conference contest against Tuskegee Thursday night. The Argos are 3-2 on the season and 1-0 at home following Sunday's 71-47 win over Saint Leo.
ABOUT UWF
* UWF is 3-2 on the year. They opened with strong wins against Albany State and Fort Valley State at the GSC/SIAC Crossover in Valdosta Ga. The Argonauts dropped their last next games, at Columbus State and Spring Hill, before defeating Saint leo on Sunday afternoon.
* Junior transfer Halee Nieman leads a pair of players who average in double figures. Nieman has posted 15.4 points on on 46 percent shoot along with a team-high 10 steals. Senior Courtney Meyer has also been solid and is averaging a double-double with 11.0 points and 12.4 rebounds to go along with 3.0 blocks per game. She has four double-double to lead the Argos.
* Junior Belle Bistrow (7-of-22), Goodman (10-of-18) and Nieman (7-of-19) have combined to make 24 of the team's 29 3-pointers.
* UWF is shooting 40 percent through five games and outrebounding its opponents 51-38.
SCOUTING TUSKEGEE
* The Golden Tigers are off to a 1-5 so far this season, with their lone victory coming at AUM, 60-49, back on Nov. 21.
* Junior forward Jade Wilson is leading the team in a number of categories, including scoring (14.5 points per game) and rebounding (6.2 rebounds per game).
* The Golden Tigers are shooting 39 percent from the floor, but just 19 percent from outside. They have made 15-of-79 attempts from 3-point range. Tuskegee is outrebounding its opponents, 41-36. They have led at the half in three of their five losses.
SERIES HISTORY
* Thursday's meeting is the first since 2013 for the Argonauts and Golden Tigers. UWF won both previous matchups -65-55 in the 2010 UWF Holiday Classic on Dec. 30, 2010 and 83-57 four seasons ago on Nov. 9, 2013. The teams will play again next week in Tuskegee.
MAGEE POSTS TOP TWO GAMES OF HER CAREER
* UWF senior Shaniqua Magee enters the Tuskegee contest after two of her best performances of her 2-year UWF career. She averaged 13 points and 4.5 rebounds in games at Spring Hill and at home against Saint Leo last week. The Collins, Miss. native scored a career-high 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting with five rebounds, five assists and turnovers in an overtime loss to Spring Hill. In the home opening victory over Saint Leo, she made her first career start and finished with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
* She is now averaging 9.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 12.4 minutes this season.
MEYER BECOMES UWF CAREER BLOCKED SHOTS LEADER
* UWF senior Courtney Meyer entered the 2017-18 season needing just 14 blocks to become the school's all-time leader in that category. Thanks to a season-high of seven at Columbus State, she stood just two shy of the record. She got those two swats at Spring Hill on Nov. 21. She now has 197, passing Melissa Nafzger who had 195 from 2003-06.
* She has the second-most blocks among active Division II players in the country.
SCHOOL RECORD 28 VICTORIES IN 2016-17
* UWF surpassed the 20-win plateau with a win at North Alabama in February ... That marked the second time in the last three years to reach that mark and just the sixth time in program history.
* UWF entered the NCAA South Regional with 25 victories, tying the school record previously set in 1997-98. Their three wins at the regional established a new school record.
UWF CLAIMS FIRST-EVER NCAA SOUTH REGION CHAMPIONSHIP
* Entering the 2017 NCAA South Regional, UWF had never advacned past the semifinal round ... that changed this year as the Argonuats posted two outstanding defensive performances in holding Benedict and Rollins to season low shooting percentages.
* Senior PG Alex Coyne was named the region's Most Outstanding Player after averaging 11 points and 10 assists with a pair of double-doubles ... Senior F Katie Bobos also earned all-tournament team honors after she led all players with 54 points in the tournament.
UWF CLAIMS FIRST-EVER GSC REGULAR-SEASON TITLE
* Without question, the 2016-17 Gulf South Conference season was one of the most memorable for the UWF women's basketball program ... The team went 18-4 and won its first-ever GSC regular-season championship, leading the league for the final eight weeks of the season ... The Argos has previously won the GSC East Division crown in 1998, 1999 and 2006.
* The Argonauts' 18 GSC wins are a new program record, topping the 16 set in 2014-15 when UWF finished second.
COYNE & BREWER NAMED TO WBCA & D2CCA ALL-AMERICA SQUADS
* UWF senior Alex Coyne and junior Toni Brewer were each named to the WBCA and D2CCA All-America squads a year ago.
* Both student-athletes were named Honorable Mention, becoming just the third and fourth players in program history to achieve All-America status. The two previous honorees were Denise McDonald in 1986 and Kristi Jernigan in 1992.
* They were also named All-Region as well.
COYNE NAMED GSC POY; BOBOS & BREWER ALSO ALL-CONFERENCE
* UWF senior Alex Coyne was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, while teammates Katie Bobos and Toni Brewer were also all-conference selections last season ... Coyne and Brewer were named to the first team with Bobos earning second team honors.
* This marks the sixth time an Argonaut has won the top honor from the league and first since 2005. Coyne joins former greats Tanisha Ruckman – twice, LaKeisha Little, Erin Vierling and Michelle Gibson as POY recipients.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
* One of the keys to UWF's success was its defensive approach thanks in large part to the addition of first-year assistant coach LaQuanda Quick ... UWF led the GSC in FG pct. defense (35.3%), 3-point FG defense (24.5%), defensive rebounds (32.6 rpg) and rebound margin (plus-8.7) ... They also ranked second in scoring defense (61.3 ppg).
* UWF went 25-1 last season when holding opponents to 70 points or less.
