Argos Fall to Mississippi College

UWF is now 15-4-1 on the year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A goal in the 39th minute for Mississippi College knocked the University of West Florida women's soccer team out of the Gulf South Conference Championships in Montgomery on Friday night. Following the loss, UWF now stands at 15-4-1 on the year – good for the most wins in the league this season.

West Florida outshot Mississippi College 13-8 in the match but the Lady Choctaws had more fortune in converting their chances than UWF did. The Argos put three shots on target in the contest, with Shantell Thompson, Leonie Kreil and Victoria Swift recording one apiece.

The game-winner for Mississippi College came from Holly Pascoe in the 39th minute, though UWF recorded excellent stops prior to the goal. Two of those came within 45 seconds of each other, and the first of those came when Katelyn Burkhart made a diving save after an MC free kick in the 11th minute. The save resulted in a corner kick, which sophomore Jordan Lewis headed into the air while she was on the goal line, turning it into an empty chance for the Lady Choctaws.

UWF took its own strong chances surrounding those two Mississippi College shots, with an attempt from Deneisha Blackwood going just wide after receiving a cross from Grace Busby, and a Leonie Kreil shot being saved by MC keeper Andrea McDonald.

The Lady Choctaws took a 1-0 lead into the half, and the Argos came out with renewed energy. Unfortunately for UWF, a solid attacking attempt in the 60th minute was shut down and MC flipped the field and turned it into a goal from Lauren Smith.

West Florida took two more shots in the final 30 minutes, holding Mississippi College to none. The MC defense would outlast UWF and stop those two opportunities.

UWF will await to see its fate for the NCAA Tournament with the selection show on Monday evening.
