UWF Takes Down North Alabama on Senior Day, 30-7

UWF scored 24-unanswered points to win going away

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF turned in one of its most complete performances in program history, piling up 355 yards of total offense while holding North Alabama to a season-low 129 yards in a 30-7 Senior Day victory at Blue Wahoos Stadium Saturday.

For UWF (6-3, 4-3 Gulf South), the win secured a winning season for the second-year program, following a 5-6 mark in 2016. The Argonauts also closed the home portion of their season with a 3-2 mark for the second-consecutive year.

The UWF rushing game was as strong as its been in recent memory, finishing with 161 yards on 38 carries – the third-most yards in its 20-game history. Freshman Anthony Johnson had a career night with 88 yards on 11 rushes, including a team season-high 39-yard run that paved the way for UWF's go-ahead score late in the first half.

Redshirt freshman Mike Beaudry was 18-of-30 for 194 yards with three touchdowns as he connected with 10 different targets. Sophomore Tate Lehtio and junior Antoine Griffin caught four balls apiece and combined for 76 yards – Lehtio with 46 and Griffin with 30. Griffin also had six punt returns for 108 yards as he setup the offense in good field position four different times.

The defense did its part, holding UNA to a season-low 129 yards of total offense and zero offensive scores. Sophomore Trent Archie led all players with a game-high eight tackles, while junior John Williamson got into the Lions' backfield numerous times, finishing with three-and-a-half sacks while the team recorded a school-record tying seven sacks. He had seven stops as well. The Argos had nine tackles for loss total.

After seeing the Lions take a 7-6 lead on a Delvon Carpenter 100-yard kickoff return, the Argos took the lead for good with 2:08 remaining in the half when junior Carlos Duclos went up high to haul in a Beaudry pass from 28 yards.

UWF made it a two possession game in the third when another long punt return from Griffin – this one a 40-yarder to midfield – setup a two play scoring drive. Beaudry hit Lehtio for 19 yards before connecting with Rodney Coates from 31 for the second passing score of the night.

Sophomore kicker Austin Williams continued his stellar play, making three field goals and three extra points. His makes came from 36 and 27 yards in the first quarter before adding a 44-yarder late in the third that put UWF up 23-7.

Sophomore Kevin Grant ended the scoring when he caught 7-yard ball on a crossing route midway through the fourth quarter.

UNA (4-5, 4-3) had 35 yards on the ground and 94 through the air. Matt Markham was 13-of-20 with an interception. Dre Hall caught six balls for 42 yards. He set an NCAA Division II record with his 45th-consecutive game with a reception.
