UWF opens its 38th season of women's basketball in the same location as last season - Valdosta, Ga. The Argos will face Albany State on Friday at 4 pm CT and Fort Valley State on Saturday at 3 pm CT. Both games will be played at The Complex on the VSU campus.

This will be the sixth season under the direction of Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. The 1996 North Carolina graduate has a 90-58 record at UWF, which includes three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last four seasons.

SCHOOL RECORD 28 VICTORIES IN 2016-17
* UWF surpassed the 20-win plateau with a win at North Alabama in February ... That marked the second time in the last three years to reach that mark and just the sixth time in program history.
* UWF entered the NCAA South Regional with 25 victories, tying the school record previously set in 1997-98. Their three wins at the regional established a new school record.

UWF CLAIMS FIRST-EVER  NCAA SOUTH REGION CHAMPIONSHIP
* Entering the 2017 NCAA South Regional, UWF had never advacned past the semifinal round ... that changed this year as the Argonuats posted two outstanding defensive performances in holding Benedict and Rollins to season low shooting percentages.
* Senior PG Alex Coyne was named the region's Most Outstanding Player after averaging 11 points and 10 assists with a pair of double-doubles ... Senior F Katie Bobos also earned all-tournament team honors after she led all players with 54 points in the tournament.

UWF CLAIMS FIRST-EVER GSC REGULAR-SEASON TITLE
* Without question, the 2016-17 Gulf South Conference season was one of the most memorable for the UWF women's basketball program ... The team went 18-4 and won its first-ever GSC regular-season championship, leading the league for the final eight weeks of the season ... The Argos has previously won the GSC East Division crown in 1998, 1999 and 2006.
* The Argonauts' 18 GSC wins are a new program record, topping the 16 set in 2014-15 when UWF finished second.

COYNE & BREWER NAMED TO WBCA & D2CCA ALL-AMERICA SQUADS
* UWF senior Alex Coyne and junior Toni Brewer were each named to the WBCA and D2CCA All-America squads a year ago.
* Both student-athletes were named Honorable Mention, becoming just the third and fourth players in program history to achieve All-America status. The two previous honorees were Denise McDonald in 1986 and Kristi Jernigan in 1992.
* They were also named All-Region as well.

COYNE NAMED GSC POY; BOBOS & BREWER ALSO ALL-CONFERENCE
* UWF senior Alex Coyne was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, while teammates Katie Bobos and Toni Brewer were also all-conference selections last season ... Coyne and Brewer were named to the first team with Bobos earning second team honors.
* This marks the sixth time an Argonaut has won the top honor from the league and first since 2005. Coyne joins former greats Tanisha Ruckman – twice, LaKeisha Little, Erin Vierling and Michelle Gibson as POY recipients.

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
* One of the keys to UWF's success was its defensive approach thanks in large part to the addition of first-year assistant coach LaQuanda Quick ... UWF led the GSC in FG pct. defense (35.3%), 3-point FG defense (24.5%), defensive rebounds (32.6 rpg) and rebound margin (plus-8.7) ... They also ranked second in scoring defense (61.3 ppg).
* UWF went 25-1 last season when holding opponents to 70 points or less.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE INFO
* UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton had the luxury of four players who could go for a double-double at any point - Alex Coyne with points/assists, and Katie Bobos, Toni Brewer and Courtney Meyer with points/rebounds.
