UWF Slips Past Tuskegee, 61-57, For Road Victory

The Argonauts won their fourth-straight game before breaking for finals

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The UWF women's basketball team overcame a number of challenges to escape Tuskegee with a 61-57 win at Chappie James Arena Tuesday night.

UWF (6-2) won it's fourth-consecutive game despite missing 14 free throws and committing 22 turnovers.

Junior Halee Nieman led the Argonauts with 19 points and eight rebounds, while senior Courtney Meyer added 13 points, 11 boards and three blocks for her sixth double-double of the season.

The Argos suffered through a tough night shooting the ball but got a great defensive performance to keep the Golden Tigers from overtaking them. UWF never trailed in the second half but held one-possession leads four times in the final 17 minutes.

"There were a number of challenges tonight, including a leaky roof which stopped play with three minutes left in the first quarter," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We struggled to regain our composure after that.

"It was another game of too many turnovers and too many missed free throws. But in the end we showed some resilience and held on for the victory."

UWF shot just 39 percent overall, while it made just 1-of-12 3-point attempts and was 20-of-34 at the free throw line.

The Argonauts led 29-27 at the half.

The lone 3-pointer came during a key stretch in the fourth quarter when the Argos were trying to keep the Golden Tigers at arms length. Tuskegee drew to within 47-44 with 7:11 remaining before UWF went on 7-1 run, which was keyed by a Antoinette Williams fast break layup, Nieman's triple from the left wing and a Jade Davis hoop. From there, the home squad could get closer than five just twice in the final minute.

Tuskegee (1-8) lost for the firth-straight game and shot 27 percent as a team. The Golden Tigers lost to UWF for the second time in six days and was led in scoring by Jade Wilson's 11 points – three below her average.

The Argos will be off for 11 days around final exams before resuming Gulf South Conference play against West Alabama, Saturday, Dec. 16. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is set for 2 p.m.
