Jackson Smith earned first career win as an Argonaut

BOX SCORE

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Jackson Smith recorded five no-hit innings to help lead the UWF baseball team to a 5-1 win over Rollins on Saturday afternoon.

"We played a lot better, and we played well enough to win today," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "We got great starting pitching from Jackson Smith, he cruised through five then gave up a hit and I think he just lost his confidence. (Jarrod) Petree was unbelievable getting us out of that bases loaded jam with no runs."

West Florida (2-4) gained a 1-0 lead from a Nic Strasser RBI single scoring Chase Kiefer in the top half of the first. Kiefer drove in his first of two runs in the next frame, laying down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Robert Lopez to score.

The Argos added insurance in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Ladeavon Matthews and a RBI single from Tanner May. West Florida's last run crossed the plate in the fifth via Kiefer's sacrifice fly to score Matthews.

To start the sixth, Smith allowed four consecutive hitters to reach base --  bringing Jarrod Petree into the game. Smith finished his outing with five innings pitched, one run and three hits allowed, and struck out two hitters and walked two.

To start his outing, Petree induced a flyout, a strikeout and a ground out to get out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation and have the score remain 5-1.

Petree retired all six of the batters he faced and recorded two strikeouts over two innings of relief.

Kiefer went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI to lead the offense. The left side of the infield of Lopez and May recorded a pair of hits each.

Lopez and catcher Trevor Payne each recorded doubles for the game's only two extra-base hits.

Rollins (4-1) had six different players record one hit and only had two innings with two or more base runners.

Tomorrow's rubber game is scheduled for noon.
