BOX SCORE
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Behind
Deangelo Legrier's fourth double double of the year, the UWF men's basketball won its third consecutive game and extended its home winning streak to seven after a 64-58 win over Union.
"I don't think our guys have any panic playing late in games anymore," said head coach
Jeff Burkhamer. "We're pretty comfortable playing in close games. Our execution was good, and our guys stepped up any made their free throws."
Union built a three-point lead heading into halftime and led by as many as seven in the first 20 minutes. The Bulldogs owned a lead as large as eight in the second half and held an advantage over the Argonauts for the first 11:02 of the second half.
UWF started a game-changing 7-0 run beginning with a pair of free throws converted by
Jason Laatsch with 9:45 remaining. On the next UWF possession,
DJ Thorpe slammed one home to cut the Union lead to 43-42, before a
Marvin Jones triple gave UWF its first lead of the second half at 45-43 with 8:58 remaining.
After Union tied the ballgame at 45-45 on its next possession, UWF went on another 7-2 run to build a 52-45 lead with 4:55 left on the clock. Union cut UWF's lead to as low as one in the late stages, but UWF went 4-for-4 on its free throw attempts in the final 24 seconds to seal a 64-58 win.
UWF outshot Union 42 percent to 36 percent. The Argos also showed its rotation depth with the bench outscoring the Bulldogs reserves 19-8.
Deangelo Legrier posted team-highs both scoring and on the boards -- pouring in 21 points while grabbing 12 rebounds.
DJ Thorpe and
Marvin Jones were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
"For me personally I tried to be very aggressive on the inside," said Legrier. "I had a rough game against them last time so I tried to bounce back and take it to them. As a team, we knew we should've won that last game against them. That was a tough loss."
Next up, UWF will start a three-game road trip on Thursday in Florence, Alabama to take on North Alabama.
