Seventh-Ranked UWF Downs Florida Southern 6-3

Argos pick up their second-straight 6-3 win

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The top-10 UWF men's and women's tennis teams collected strong wins over Florida Southern in non-conference action at the Valdosta State Tennis Center Friday. 
  
The No. 7-ranked women's squad earned a 6-3 win over the 33rd-ranked Mocs (0-2) to improve to 2-0 on the season. 
 
FSC grabbed an early 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at Nos 2 and 3. UWF got its only doubles win at No. 1 where Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos defeated Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci, 8-6.
 
In singles, Valeria Mantilla downed Lola Asis, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 to even the match at 2-2. UWF grabbed a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 by Jordana Lujan over Devrimci before stretching the lead to 4-2 when Coyos got by Linnea Skymberg, 6-4, 6-3 at the two spot.
 
FSC cut the lead to 3-2 when Nionova outlasted Lopes, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 1. However, Heather Mixon gave the win to West Florida with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 triumph over Popovic at number five. Diana Vlad closed the match with a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3 victory over Lorena Rionda at the fourth position for the final 6-3 margin.

The No. 9-ranked Argonaut men's team rolled to a 9-0 victory while improving to 2-0 on the season as well.
 
UWF swept through the doubles with wins from their two nationally-ranked duos – No. 1 ranked Alex Peyrot and Pedro Dumont and No. 12 ranked Alfonso Castellano and Pablo Tellez and the No. 2 team in the lineup of Gabriel Diaz and Warren Kuhn. The closest score was Peyrot/Dumont with an 8-5 win.
 
In singles play, Diaz, 37th-ranked Peyrot and Kuhn all won at the top three spots, along with Dumont at the No. 5 position. Serdar Bojadjieva earned a 6-1, 7-5 triumph at No. 4 and Sebastian Sanchez was nearly perfect with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at the No. 6 slot.

UWF will continue its three-match stretch at Valdosta on Saturday as both teams will meet Embry-Riddle. Matches are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time.
