BOX SCORE
VALDOSTA, Ga. – The seventh-ranked UWF women's tennis team completed a perfect weekend with a 7-2 win over 14th-ranked Valdosta State at the VSU Tennis Courts Sunday.
Â
The Argos improved to 3-0 on the season and won their 69th-consecutive match over a Gulf South Conference opponent. The streak goes back seven seasons with the last setback coming in the 2010 GSC Championship.
Â
UWF came from behind in all three doubles matches to secure the first three team points.
Paula Lopez and
Paula Coyos earned the win at No. 1 doubles with a 8-6 win over Bea Morales Hernandez and Anke Poncelet.
Jordana Lujan and
Diana Vlad also won with an 8-6 decision, taking down Anja Cosivic and Daniela Barta at No. 2. And at No. 3,
Valeria Mantilla and
Heather Mixon claimed a narrow 9-7 win over Laura Ubeda and Estes Widdershoven.
Â
In singles play, UWF earned points at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6. Coyos defeated Cosovic, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Vlad came back from a set down to defeat Sabrina Schmidt, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, Mixon also dug out of an early hole for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5, and Mantilla edged out Barta, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 6.
Â
"We were down in all three doubles and the girls fought back to get those points," UWF head coach
Derrick Racine said. "When you win all three, the momentum is in your favor and that helped us. Coyos played really well and Diana and Heather both fought for 3-set wins. At one point we were up 4-0 but all of the matches were really close."
Â
VSU's two points came at No. 1 and No. 3 in singles play, where Morales Hernandez defeated Lopez, 6-4, 6-3, and Ubeda defeated Lujan, 7-5, 6-4.
Â
UWF will return to action next weekend with a pair of home contests at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The Argos will play host to Rollins on Friday and GSC foe Alabama Huntsville on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 10:00 a.m.
