PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 20th-ranked UWF women's basketball team closed out the regular-season with a gutsy 69-65 win over Shorter on Senior Day at the UWF Field House Saturday.
Â
UWF (23-5, 18-4 Gulf South) now enters the GSC Championship tournament as the No. 1 seed and will play host to No. 8 seed Christian Brothers (13-13, 10-12) on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
Â
On Saturday, the Argos received some big performances from a pair of juniors in
Courtney Meyer and
Toni Brewer. Meyer had 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, a game-high 16 rebounds and six blocks, while Brewer finished with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10 boards.
Â
Seniors
Alex Coyne and
Katie Bobos each made big plays down the stretch to secure the victory. Coyne handed out 11 assists while scoring 10 points. Bobos had 15 rebounds and nine points, including a clutch baseline jumper with 45 seconds to play that put the Argos ahead for good at 64-63.
Â
"We knew this was going to be tough, especially coming off the emotional game on Thursday night," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "I really loved the effort we got out of
Courtney Meyer today. She's not somebody we rely on for scoring but today she came through offensively. We let our guard down a little too early and had to push hard to finish."
Â
The Argonauts shot 43 percent and outrebounded the Hawks, 48-32. UWF used 12 offensive boards to finish with 12 second chance points.
Â
UWF led by as many as 10 in the second quarter before taking a 35-30 lead into the locker room. The lead stayed between five and 10 points for the entire third quarter before the Argos got layups from Meyer and
Shami Goodman to extend it to 11 entering the fourth.
Â
The lead extended to 16 three times in the fourth with the last coming on a
Katie O'Neal jumper with 5:49 to play. But the Hawks outscored the Argos 21-4 over the next five minutes and took a 63-62 lead on a pair of Adams free throws with 1:15 remaining. That's when Bobos beat the shot clock on the baseline and the Argos made 4-of-5 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Â
Goodman was nails in the second half for UWF, scoring all 12 of her points on 5-of-7 shooting in 13 minutes off the bench. She had eight of the Argos' 20 in the fourth quarter.
Â
Shorter (8-19, 7-15) got 18 points and eight rebounds from Taylor Adams, while Jackie Hudson had 12 points, eight boards and five steals.Â
