MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 4-No. 5 matchup of the Gulf South Conference Tournament came down to the very last second, but unfortunately for the UWF men's basketball team, the Argos suffered a close 65-64 setback to Christian Brothers at Canale Arena on Tuesday night.
"It was a hard-fought game. We knew it was going to be difficult to come in here and we did not play well enough to win," said head coach
Jeff Burkhamer. "We missed layups, we missed our free throws. It's disappointing because we had our chances."
The two teams shot nearly identical percentages, with UWF's being slightly higher at 43.4 percent in comparison to CBU's 43.1.
Marvin Jones led the team with 19 points and sunk all five of his first three-point attempts.
Darryl Tucker contributed his sixth double double of the year with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Jason Laatsch added 13 points and hit two three-pointers late to give UWF a last-second chance.
CBU was led by All-GSC First Team selection Adam Dieball's 22 points and eight assists. Bucs point guard Jeff Larkin recorded 17 points but committed six turnovers to go along with just three assists.
To end the first half, West Florida trailed 28-25 despite outshooting the Bucs 38.5 percent to 36.7 percent. CBU was led by Dieball's 15 points, and the CBU defense held the Argos without a field goal for the final 4:04 of the half. CBU ended the half on a 9-0 run.
Jones poured in 11 points in the first half and went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
West Florida gained a 35-33 lead with 14:36 left in the second half after a
Marvin Jones three-pointer. CBU responded with a 6-0 run, and never lost sight of that lead despite UWF making it a one-point contest on four separate occasions.
UWF made it a one-point game with two seconds left with
Jason Laatsch's third three of the day, but CBU's Dieball was able to inbound the ball successfully with 0.3 seconds left to seal Christian Brothers' spot in the GSC Tournament semifinals.
West Florida, ranked No. 6 in the South Region in the NCAA's regional rankings last week, will wait for a potential at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for Sunday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m. CT through an online stream at NCAA.com.
