PENSACOLA, Fla. – Toni Brewer had a game-high 20 points and Alex Coyne captained an 11-0 run that helped No. 20/24 UWF defeat Christian Brothers, 65-52, in the quarterfinals of the VisitSpaceCoast.com Gulf South Conference Championship at the UWF Field House Tuesday.

UWF (24-5) outscored the eighth-seeded Lady Bucs 24-14 over the final 11:21 to pull away and advance to Saturday's semifinal round. The Argonauts will meet West Georgia (15-12) at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University at Noon.

But on Tuesday, it was Brewer and Coyne who led the offense, combining for 37 points on 16-of-28 shooting. Brewer had 14 points and six rebounds at halftime to help UWF to a 28-26 lead. Coyne scored seven points in the key 11-0 run late that helped the Argos create some distance and extend their lead to 52-38 with 6:07 remaining.

"I told our players at halftime that this was a game where we could wear them down in the second half and we saw that where their shots weren't falling and were having some tough times in the paint," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "We knew in the second half we needed more than Alex and Toni to score for us and once a couple of players hit some open shots, it freed up the rest of the players to relax a bit and just play."

UWF struggled to get into a rhythm in the first half and most of the third quarter, making just 35 percent after 30 minutes. But the Argos got their sea legs and shot 8-of-12 overall and 3-of-3 from outside in the fourth quarter. UWF ended the game at 41 percent.

Shami Goodman had 10 of her 12 points in the second half and sank two big 3-pointers in span of 85 seconds midway through the fourth quarter. Courtney Meyer finished with four blocks to raise her season total to 89, tying the UWF single-season record held by Melissa Nafzger in the 2005-06 campaign.

CBU (13-14) shot 39 percent from the floor but was held to 4-of-12 in the final stanza. Samantha Reeves led the Lady Bucs with 20 points but was held to just four in the second half.

The game had two tie scores and 10 lead changes. UWF never trailed in the second half.
