MOBILE, Ala. – Justin Ambrosino's 4-for-6 day at the plate including a pair of home runs and a career-high five RBI lifted the UWF baseball team to a 13-8 victory over Spring Hill on Wednesday night.
"We got out the gates swinging the bats pretty early," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "Hopefully this will carry a little momentum and we got our first 'W' on the board so you have to be happy about that."
For UWF (1-3), other notable offensive performances include Chase Kiefer, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI, and Trevor Payne who recorded the first multi-hit game of his career going 2-for-4. UWF walked seven times in the game while only striking out on three occasions.
Jared Middleton made his first collegiate start and posted a strong line of five innings, one earned run, six strikeouts, one walk and eight hits allowed.
Spring Hill (1-3) struck first with a run in the first, but a six-run second inning for UWF set the tone for the remainder of the contest.
Tanner Halstead kicked off UWF's scoring with an RBI single up the middle, before Brandon Harmon drove in a run on a fielder's choice and a second run came around to score on an error by Badger shortstop Daniel Rodriguez.
Ambrosino's first longball of the day capped the scoring in the third inning, hitting a shot over the left-centerfield fence to make it a 6-1 ballgame.
With a 6-2 lead, Ambrosino struck once again, hitting a no-doubt two-run homer in he fourth. The home run kickstarted a five-run fourth inning, featuring another RBI from Halstead and a two-RBI single from Kiefer.
UWF tacked on a couple in the sixth with RBI singles from Trevor Payne and Brandon Harmon to open it up to 13-3.
Brian Browning took over for Middleton on the mound and posted a 1-2-3 sixth inning with a strikeout.
Spring Hill finished the game with five unanswered runs but could not overcome the late 10-run deficit.
UWF resumes play on Friday night when it plays Rollins in the series opener of a three-game set beginning at 7:00 p.m.
