MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The UWF men's and women's tennis teams collected a pair of wins over Auburn-Montgomery at Lagoon Park on Thursday to open the 2017 spring season.
The No. 9 ranked men's squad (1-0) rode the strength of six singles victories for an 8-1 win over the Warhawks. UWF's No. 7 women's team (1-0) claimed a 6-3 win by virtue of five singles triumphs as they erased an early 2-1 deficit following doubles play.
On the women's side,
Paula Lopez and
Paula Coyos earned the first point of the match with an 8-2 win at the top spot.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Argos received straight-set wins from No. 41 Lopez, Coyos,
Jordana Lujan and
Heather Mixon at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 5, respectively.Â
Valeria Mantilla closed out the day's action with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 win at No. 6.
For the men, Warren Kuhn and Gabriel Diaz got the Argos on the board first with a 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Following a loss at the No. 3 spot, the nation's top-ranked tandem of Alex Peyrot and Pedro Dumont remained undefeated against Division 2 competition with an 8-6 decision.
In singles play, all six Argos earned points as five collected straight-set wins and one got a 3-set victory. Diaz got his first singles win at UWF since transferring at semester for the deciding point at the No. 2 position.
Both programs will return to action the weekend of Feb. 17-19 when they face Florida Southern, Embry-Riddle and Valdosta State in Valdosta, Ga.
