Argos Complete Sweep, Extend Winning Streak to 10

Jared Gonzalez improved to 3-0 with six innings and no earned runs allowed

PENSACOLA, Fla.  – The University of West Florida baseball team continued its winning ways with a 9-1 victory over Christian Brothers on Monday afternoon.

With the win, the Argonauts completed their second consecutive sweep against a GSC opponent and extend their season-long winning streak to 10. West Florida is now second place in the GSC and is just one game back of first-place Delta State.

"It was a good weekend. I was real proud of the pitchers," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "They located well, the defense was good, and we had a lot of contributors in the lineup."

UWF was gifted a pair of runs in the first to get the scoring, coming courtesy of a Taylor Angley-Holman error that allowed Justin Ambrosino and Brandon Harmon to score.

Robert Lopez contributed a 2-RBI triple in the right-field corner in the fourth and later came around to score on a productive 6-3 groundout by Casey Crawford.

After CBU put up its only run in the fifth, Colby Brown hit a 2-RBI double down the left field line in the bottom half of the frame to extend the lead to 7-1. Justin Ambrosino posted an RBI single to score Chase Kiefer and in the ensuing at bat, Nick Kerkmann hit a sacrifice fly to score Brandon Harmon.

Jared Gonzalez stayed a perfect 3-0 on the season and kept the CBU lineup quiet throughout, allowing just three hits and one unearned run over his six innings of work. Gonzalez struck out three and walked none, continuing his consecutive innings without allowing a walk to 25.

Gonzalez retired each of the first 11 batters he faced and ended his outing retiring his last five. The Navarre product needed just 58 pitches for his six-inning outing.

Jared Middleton and JT Granat finished the game on the mound and both contributed hitless performances. Middleton tossed a pair of innings and started his outing by striking out the side in order in the sixth. Granat struck out two and did not allow a hit in the ninth to close UWF's 10th straight win.

Both Middleton and Granat extended impressive streaks, with Middleton pushing his stretch of not allowing an earned run to 14.1 innings, and Granat, who moved to the bullpen on March 14, has still not allowed a run since that point. He has allowed only one hit over his four relief appearances this season.

Collectively, the pitching staff did not allow a hit in the game's final 4.2 innings.

Kiefer tied his career-high with three stolen bases in the contest and is one shy of the program's career record with 76.

Ladeavon Matthews racked up a career-high four hits in the game and brought his season batting average to .360. He also posted his seventh double of the season, giving UWF one of its two extra-base hits in the game.

Justin Ambrosino concluded his strong week with a 3-for-4 performance in Monday's finale. Ambrosino hit .538 (7-for-13) for the week and posted a slugging percentage of .846 and an on base percentage of .647 to lead the team in all three categories.

"They're (Christian Brothers) a team that you need to make the plays your supposed to make in order to win. I think we did that in all three games this weekend and that set the tone throughout," said Jeffcoat.

Colby Brown and Robert Lopez led the team with two RBIs apiece. Eight of nine spots in the UWF lineup had at least one hit.

The Argonauts await a highly anticipated GSC series at Union next weekend. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1, at 1:00 p.m.
