PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 6 ranked UWF women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Friday at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex to open a 5-match weekend.
UWF (16-5, 7-0 Gulf South) defeated No. 9 UC San Diego, 7-2, and Mississippi College, 9-0. The Argonauts will play three matches on Saturday, beginning at 8:00 a.m. with West Georgia. UWF will also face Delta State at Noon and Christian Brothers at 3:00 p.m.
In the first match of the day against the Tritons, UWF fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, only to storm back with six singles victories, highlighted by a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 1 by 34th-ranked
Paula Lopez over 28th-ranked Britta Mosser. The Argos also compiled straight-set wins from the middle four spots in the ladder before
Valeria Mantilla closed out the victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 6.
In the afternoon match versus the Choctaws, the Argonauts were not challenged early, taking the three doubles contests by scores of 8-1, 8-2 and 8-3.
The momentum continued in singles as UWF won five matches in straight sets, with Lopez coming from a set down to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 at the top position.
