BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Alex Coyne scored 22 points and had six assists to lead No. 20/24 UWF in the VisitSpaceCoast Gulf South Conference Championship game but Valdosta State had just a little more in the tank for a 91-79 overtime victory at the Pete Hanna Center Sunday.

Top-seeded UWF (25-6) shot 37 percent and was outrebounded 51-39 by second-seeded Valdosta State (22-9). The Argonauts will find out Sunday night what seed they will be in next week's NCAA Championship.

"We showed a lot of fight and determination while playing with our backs against the wall," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "Alex Coyne made play-after-play for us and did all the little things in addition to scoring to keep us in the game. We had to go deep into our bench and got some good production from some players that don't normally get much time as we batt;ed foul trouble and in-game injuries."

VSU made its first six shots with four 3-pointers to grab a 17-6 lead in the opening four minutes. But UWF responded and outscored the Lady Blazers 31-16 over the next 10:25to grab its first lead of the game, 37-33. The Argos led 45-42 at the half as both teams shot 53 percent.

The teams traded leads four times in the third quarter before VSU went up by seven early in the fourth. Again, the Argos fought back and tied the game on a Shami Goodman 3-pointer with 21.3 seconds to play. The visitors got a good look at a three in the closing seconds but it caromed off sending the teams to overtime.

UWF was unable to get much going in the extra session, being outscored 13-1 and missing all eight field goal attempts.

Goodman finished with 16 points and four 3-pointers to join Coyne on the all-tournament team. Senior Katie Bobos had 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season. Junior Toni Brewer had 10 points and seven boards.
