COYNE NAMED GSC POY BOBOS & BREWER ALSO ALL-CONFERENCE
* UWF senior Alex Coyne was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, while teammates Katie Bobos and Toni Brewer were also all-conference selections as announced by the league office last Monday ... Coyne and Brewer were named to the first team with Bobos earning second team honors.
* This marks the sixth time an Argonaut has won the top honor from the league and first since 2005. Coyne joins former greats Tanisha Ruckman – twice, LaKeisha Little, Erin Vierling and Michelle Gibson as POY recipients.
* Coyne has averaged 10.0 points, 6.5 assists and 2.8 rebounds while leading UWF to its first GSC regular-season championship in school history. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native whose family now lives in Navarre, Fla. ranks third in the NCAA in assists and 31st in assist-to-turnover ratio. Her 367 assists in two years at UWF ranks second in school history, while her 6.74 assists per game in that time span ranks third all-time in GSC history. She was also an Academic All-District selection last month ... This is her second all-conference nod after second-team accolades a year ago following her transfer from Southern Miss.
* Brewer has been the most dominant forward in the GSC this season, posting 13.9 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. The junior from Huntsville, Ala. ranks eighth in NCAA with 15 double-doubles & fourth in both rebounds and defensive rebounds. She has put up 22 double-figure scoring games and 18 double-figure rebound, including three games with at least 20 boards. Earlier this season she surpassed 1,000 career points and currently has 1,057 ... Brewer was a second-team all-conference winner two years ago when she was also named the GSC Freshman of the Year.
* Bobos earns her second all-GSC award after collecting 12.0 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, joining Brewer as the only players in the league to average a double-double. A four-year starter from Lowell, Ind., she ranks 12th in NCAA with 14 double-doubles and 16th in rebounds. This season she became UWF's career leader in rebounds and went over 1,000 points. She is also a 2-time Academic All-District honoree.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
* One of the keys to UWF's season has been its defensive approach thanks in large part to first-year assistant coach LaQuanda Quick ... UWF leads the GSC in FG pct. defense (35.3%), 3-point FG defense (24.5%), defensive rebounds (32.6 rpg) and rebound margin (plus-8.7) ... They are also second in scoring defense (61.3 ppg).
* UWF went 24-1 this season when holding opponents to 70 points or less.

* The Argonauts are averaging 71.3 points per game this season.

* UWF climbed three spots to No. 17 in the latest Division 2 Media Poll on Tuesday and fell three spots in the WBCA rankings from No. 24 to the second team receiving votes.
* UWF had risen to as high as No. 14 in the Division 2 Media Poll in mid January ... The No. 14 ranking is the highest for the Argonauts in the history of the poll.
* The Women's Basketball Division 2 Media Poll, sponsored by D2SIDA, in its third year of existence ... The regional poll is released every Monday, followed by the national poll every Tuesday ... Each region has six representatives that comprise the regional poll ... The national poll has 16 voters – 2 from each region ... The Women's Basketball D2 regional polls will conclude Feb. 6, 2017 due to the start of the NCAA regional polls. The national polls will continue through the end of the season.
UWF MAINTAINS NO. 2 SPOT IN NCAA REGIONAL RANKING
* UWF spent all three weeks ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II regional rankings and was the No. 2 seed in the NCAA South Regional. Eckerd was the No. 1 team. The Argos lead the region with 25 in-region wins.
* In the final region rankings, the Argos were the highest of four GSC teams in the rankings, with Valdosta State at No. 7, Lee at No. 8, North Alabama at No. 9 and Union at No. 10.
* The region polls will determine the five at large bids to the eight-team NCAA South Region Tournament in March. The eight-team tournament will consist of the three conference tournament champions from the south region (Gulf South, Sunshine, Southern Intercollegiate) and five at-large bids. The women's region will be March 10, 11 and 13 at the location of the top seed.

* Former assistant coach Jessie Ivey was named the National Division 2 Assistant Coach of the Year by the WBCA, before accepting a similar position at Bowling Green ... UWF hired former WNBA veteran LaQuanda Quick as her replacement. Quick spent last season at Winston Salem State and has been put in charge of the Argonaut defense ... UWF took a foreign tour to the Dominican Republic from Aug. 11-18. The squad played four games, visited local sugarcane villages, orphanages and women's shelters while ministering and sharing the love of basketball.
UWF PICKED 3RD IN GSC PRESEASON POLL
* The UWF women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Gulf South Conference preseason coaches poll ... UWF earned a total of 101 points in the voting process, collecting one first place vote, a league-high five second-place votes, one third, three fourth and a fifth place vote.
* Defending regular-season champion Union was picked first, followed by Delta State, which won the GSC Tournament title. Lee followed UWF in fourth, and Shorter was picked fifth.
* Seniors Katie Bobos and Alex Coyne were each named to the 5-member preseason all-conference team ... Bobos was a second-team all-GSC and academic all-GSC honoree last year after averaging 12.8 points and 8.0 rebounds. The Lowell, Indiana native scored in double figures in 21 games and collected eight double-doubles ... Coyne was also a second team choice a year ago after transferring from Southern Miss. In her first season with the Argos, the point guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania averaged 10.0 points, 6.7 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. She led the GSC and ranked fifth in the NCAA in assists, and was third in GSC and 49th nationally in steals.
