Bats Come to Life in UWF's 11-4 Win Over Columbus State

Tanner Halstead went 2-for-4 with a season-high three RBI

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida baseball team got back on track Wednesday afternoon, using a balanced offensive effort and Trace Penton's seven-inning quality start to defeat Columbus State, 11-4.

"We talked about having a positive attitude before today's game and trying to finish strong and not have any regrets," said head coach Mike Jeffcoat. "They bounced back today. Obviously, we wish we had been doing better, but we got good pitching from Trace Penton today and we got out of the gate strong."

A five-run first and a three-run second and third provided UWF (24-19) with 11 early runs and supplied Penton with more than enough run support. Penton improved to 3-0 on the year after going seven innings with just three runs and four hits allowed.

The scoring started for UWF with Nick Kerkmann's one-out RBI single through the right side of the infield scoring Brandon Harmon. Kerkmann later scored the second Argonaut run on a passed ball and the Argos used RBI singles from Tanner Halstead, Matt Sullivan and Michael Savas to jump to a 5-0 lead after the first.

CSU (25-17) struck for a two-run second inning, but the Argos made up for it in the home half, using a three-run double from Halstead to extend the lead to 8-2. UWF had another three-run effort in the third, thanks to a Harmon RBI single and a wild pitch and error that allowed Chase Kiefer and Kerkmann to score.

Columbus State added a single run in the fifth and a solo home run in the ninth, but Brian Browning and JT Granat held off the Cougars in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the 11-4 victory.

Harmon, Halstead and Trevor Payne all contributed two-hit showings for the Argonauts. Halstead contributed a season-high three RBI and led all players in the contest. Eight of nine UWF starters recorded at least one hit in the contest.

The Argonauts travel to Rome, Georgia, this weekend to face Shorter (20-21, 9-18 GSC) for the team's last GSC road series of the season. The Argos and Hawks begin the three-game set on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET.
