Women's Tennis Advances To GSC Finals with Second-Straight Shutout

The Argonauts have won their last 80 matches against league competition

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The top-seeded UWF women's tennis team posted its second shutout in as many days to advance to the Gulf South Conference Tournament title match with a 5-0 win over North Alabama at the Lagoon Park Tennis Complex on Friday morning.
 
Sixth-ranked UWF improved to 22-6 on the season as it reached the 22-win mark for the fifth-consecutive season. The Argonauts will meet 10th-ranked Valdosta State (16-5) at 10 a.m. on Saturday. This is the 14th time the two have faced each other in the championship match, including in nine of the last 10 years.
 
For the second time this week, UWF swept the doubles matches earning wins at No. 1 from Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos, at No. 2 from Jordana Lujan and Heather Mixon, and No. 3 from Diana Vlad and Valeria Mantilla.
 
Coyos earned the team's fourth point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nina Linke at No. 2 singles. Lopez clinched it minutes later when she closed out Olivera Ngouabeu 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. The Argonauts were easily in control in two of the remaining four matches and had the momentum in each of them when the outcome was decided.
 
UWF advances to the championship match for the 23rd-consecutive year – every season since joining the GSC in the 2004-05 season – and have won a league-record 16 titles.
