PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Becca Taylor was in total control in West Florida's 2-0 win over Lee in Thursday's NCAA South Super Regional matchup. The senior went the full seven innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five Lady Flames batters and earning her sixth shutout of the year.
Taylor earned her South Region-best 27th win of the year in the effort, and UWF improved to 43-13 on the year.
The Argonauts cashed in on some timely hitting yet again, with a game-winning, fourth-inning RBI double from
Tiona Hill and an RBI single from
Meghan Toney that brought in an insurance run in the fifth. The game marked Hill's 17th multi-hit game of the year, and Toney's 14th. In all, UWF picked up six hits against Gulf South Conference ERA leader Taylor Moran, who struck out four and issued two walks.
But it was Taylor's day from the top of the first. The senior blew by the Lady Flames in the first two innings, getting four infield popups over her first six outs, and she allowed just one hit through the first three innings.
The UWF offense took a trip through the lineup to get going against Moran, but the Argonauts used a single from Toney, a sacrifice bunt from Sassman and a double over left fielder Rachel Polacek's head from
Tiona Hill to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth.
The hit marked Hill's third game-winning RBI in West Florida's last six games, and she has now hit and incredible .440 (11-25) with five doubles and 13 runs driven in over her last eight games.
Taylor worked out of a minor jam in the top of the fifth, following a two-out single from Kayla Louie and a walk from Stevie Baird to load the bases. The Argonaut hurler was unfazed by the pressure and got a groundout that was cleanly fielded by Toney to end the inning.
Toney added more in the bottom half of the inning, after a leadoff double from
Caitlin Steel, who now has a five-game hitting streak.
Sara Spears dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Steel to third, and Toney lifted a single down the left field line to give UWF an insurance run and stretch the lead to 2-0.
Taylor allowed just one hit over the final two innings, and forced Louie to pop out into foul territory for the last out.
Taylor is now 3-0 against the Lady Flames this year, with two shutouts, 12 strikeouts and a .185 opponent batting average over 18.1 innings.
UWF needs just one win on Friday against Lee to advance to the NCAA Championships in Salem, Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 pm at the UWF Softball Complex.
