UWF Opens Season with Tampa and Flagler

Argonauts enter 2017 riding a 10-game unbeaten streak

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida men's soccer team will host Tampa and Flagler to open its 2017 campaign on Saturday, September 2 and Monday, September 4 at the UWF Soccer Complex. The Argonauts finished last year on a 10-game unbeaten streak, finishing the season at 10-5-3 and earning a spot in the Gulf South Conference Championship title game.
 
The game on Saturday will begin at 7:00 p.m., and the Monday contest is slated for a 12:30 p.m. start.
 
Saturday will mark Military Appreciation Day, allowing all members of the military free admission by showing their ID. Both games in the weekend set will feature a live video broadcast and live stats, which can be found by clicking the links above or by visiting GoArgos.com/Live.
 
 
GSC DOMINANCE
Bill Elliot and the UWF men's soccer program has been the most consistent in the league since its inception in 1996. UWF leads the league in Conference wins (95), overall wins (241), conference finals appearances (13), and conference titles (9) over the last 21 years. Pensacola has also hosted the league tournament a league leading 12 times, however the semifinals and finals will he hosted in Montgomery, Alabama starting this year.  UWF has had 58 players placed on the All-Tournament team including six being names Most Outstanding Player.  Coach Elliot has been the Coach of the Year five times, most recently in 2013, has had 3 players named Player of the Year four times, Richard Dixon in 2009 & 2012, and three players as Freshman of the Year.
 
RETURNING AWARD WINNERS
Junior Kameron Bethell earned a 2016 NSCAA All-South Region Second Team selection in addition to being named an All-GSC First Team member. Bethell is the first UWF player since Patrick Zimmer in 2013 to earn All-Region honors from both NSCAA and D2CCA... Senior Chandler Castleman is one of UWF's three players to be named to GSC's All Tournament team last year that returns in 2017... Rising Sophmores Erick Rivera and Isaiah Lopez return after being named GSC Freshman of the week winners in 2016...
 
2017 ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE
Former Defenseman Nolan Intermoia (2003-08) became the eigth former men's soccer player to be inducted to the UWF Athletics Hall of Fame.  Intermoia career included:  77 Starts… Four All-GSC selections (First Team in 2007 & 2008; Second Team in 2005 & 2006)… 2008 All-America choice (Daktronics and NSCAA)… 2008 All-South Region… 2008 All-South Region Tournament team… 2008 Team Captain… 2008-09 GSC Top Ten Honoree… First Team All-GSC All Time Team… UWF won three GSC Championships and made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a spot in the 2006 NCAA Semifinals during his time on campus.
 
WEST FLORIDA'S UNBEATEN STREAK
Heading into the 2017 season, the men's soccer team is riding a 10-game unbeaten streak.  This streak needs to grow if this team hopes to break the current GSC team record of 22 games that UWF set back in 2006. Here are a look at some other team records the program holds.
 
BUILDING FROM 2016
UWF attempts to build from a 2016 season in which UWF had an overall record of 10-5-3 and 5-1-2 in the GSC.  The Argonauts were picked to finish second in the GSC Preseason Poll.  University of West Alabama was picked to finish in the top spot after edging past the Argonauts in the GSC final decided by a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.
 
SEASON-OPENER HISTORY
The Argonauts faced off against Tampa in the 2016 season opener away to Tampa. The Argonauts are out for revenge after falling 4-2 in last season's away opener.
