UWF Opens Season With Hampton Inn-Vitational

Argonauts to face top competition over three-day tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla. – For the sixth consecutive year, the University of West Florida volleyball team will bring in top competition from around the country for a season-opening tournament. This year marks the third annual Hampton Inn-Vitational, which runs from August 31 through September 2.
 
The Argonauts open the tournament with a contest against Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday, August 31 at 6 pm in the UWF Field House, before hosting USC-Aiken at 11:30 am and Southern Indiana at 6 pm on Friday, and wrapping up the tournament against Southwest Minnesota State at 3:30 pm on Saturday.
 
General admission tickets for the tournament are $5, while seniors, military members and non-UWF students get in for $3. Admission will be free for children under 6, children in a youth athletic team uniform, and UWF students, faculty and staff.
 
Nine of the 12 matches during the weekend will feature a live video stream, which can be found at GoArgos.com/Live or by clicking the link above. All matches will have live stats.
 
2017 HAMPTON INN-VITATIONAL
West Florida will host the Hampton Inn-vitational at the UWF Field House for the third consecutive year beginning Aug. 31... This year's tournament features UWF, Southern indiana, Southwest Minnesota State, USC Aiken, and Wheeling Jesuit... The five teams combined for an eye-popping 135-45 record in 2016... UWF is 30-17 all-time when hosting a season-opening tournament, and the squad went 2-2 in last year's tournament.
 
GSC DOMINANCE
Since Melissa Wolter took over the UWF volleyball program prior to the 2003 season, West Florida has been nearly unstoppable in GSC play, owning a 168-24 record... Last year the Argonauts went 17-3 in GSC action... UWF currently has a 61-match winning streak during regular season home games against conference opponents... The last loss for UWF in a GSC regular season home game came against North Alabama on October 24, 2009... UWF won six consecutive GSC Championships from 2008-2013... UWF currently owns the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC, which currently stands at 13 (not including 2004 season shortened by Hurricane Ivan)... Valdosta State and North Alabama are tied for the second longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC at three... UWF has reached 11-consecutive NCAA South Regional Tournaments.
 
STCYR CHASING ANOTHER CAREER RECORD
Monique StCyr looks to build on her career assists record of 3,337 in 2017 while chasing another top spot… StCyr needs 31 Service Aces to break Jessica Bragion's (2002-2005) career record of 165.

West Florida welcomes the following four freshmen and four transfers to campus: freshman libero Logan Kael (Knoxville, Tenn.), freshmen outside hitters Kingsly Erps (Austin, Texas), Kierra Potts (Crestview, Fla.), and Ashlan Riley (Lewis Center, Ohio), sophmore transfer right side hitter Taylor Hall (League City, Texas), junior outside hitter Barbara Briceno (Lima, Peru) junior transfer middle blocker Kenzie Chrisman (Sterling, Colo.), and junior transfer Nadine Williams (Jacksonville, Fla.).
 
RETURNING AWARD WINNERS
West Florida' returns a variety of award winners frrom last year.  Monique StCyr earned D2CCA All Region first team, DII South Region All Tournament Team, and All-GSC first team...  Rachel Neblett earned All-GSC second team honors as well as Offensive Player of the Week (10/11)... Jordyn Poppen was named Freshman of the week (11/18).
