Records: UWF is 1-0 following a 20-16 week one victory at Missouri S&T. Chowan is 0-2 with a home loss to Fayetteville State and a road loss at Delta State last Saturday.

THE COACHES
* UWF coach Pete Shinnick
was hired as the first coach in program history on Feb. 6, 2014. He has a 109-52 career record in 15-plus years, which includes a 50-24 mark at UNC Pembroke from 2007-13 and 53-22 at Azusa Pacific from 1999-05.
Chowan coach Tim Place is in his 10th season with the Hawks and is 34-58 overall. He is 45-69 as a college head coach, going 11-11 at Urbana University from 2006 & 2007.

ABOUT UWF
    UWF got a strong defensive performance with three turnovers in a 20-16 road win at Missouri S&T. Martes Wheeler earned GSC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a career-high 10 tackles and forcing a fumble inside the 1-yard line in the final minute to help preserve the victory.
    Sophomore Mike Beaudry made his first career start at quarterback and threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-31. Sophomore Chris Schwarz finished with 34 yards on a career-high 19 carries.

ABOUT CHOWAN
    Chowan is 0-2 on the season after dropping a 42-13 decision at Gulf South Conference member Delta State last week in Cleveland, Miss.
    Freshman QB Bryce Witt has thrown for 576 yards in two games. He was named CIAA Rookie of the Week after Week 1 when he went 17-for-28 for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Senior DE Nate Wyche has anchored the defense with 19 tackles, 4.5 sacks and five tackles for loss. He was named the CIAA Defensive Lineman of the Week after the season-opener when he had 15 stops with four tackles for loss and three sacks.

HAPPY TO BE BACK IN BLUE WAHOOS STADIUM
    UWF went 3-2 in its first season at Blue Wahoos Stadium last year, playing in one of the most picturesque venues in the country.
    The Argonauts averaged 6,328 fans over five home dates with three sellouts (6,288 capacity), ranking 18th among NCAA Division II institutions and second in the Gulf South Conference (UNA was 12th with 7,670).

BARNES, DUNCOMBE & GRIFFIN NAMED TO GSC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
    A year after winning five games and finishing in sixth place in the Gulf South Conference in its first-ever season, the UWF football team was picked seventh in the 2017 Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league office in July.
    Additionally, senior Reggie Barnes, sophomore Andre Duncombe and junior Antoine Griffin were selected to the preseason all-GSC team by the league's nine head coaches. Barnes and Duncombe were among the four linebackers on the team, while Griffin was one of two return specialists chosen.
    Barnes ranked third on the team with 67 tackles and added six tackles for loss, six QB hurries and a pass break-up. Duncombe making 51 tackles and was second on the team with 12.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks a year ago. Griffin was a standout receiver for the Argos, finishing with 560 yards on 43 receptions and seven touchdowns. He also returned 18 punts for a 13.33 yard average and eight kickoffs for a 20.5 yard average.

NORTHWEST FLORIDA PLAYERS MAKE UP NEARLY 25 PERCENT OF THE 2017 ROSTER
    The influx of local talent has been more evident this season, with 23 players out of Northwest Florida's six county region from Escambia to Washington and Bay. An additional six student-athletes are within a 2-hour drive of Pensacola.

POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE
    UWF has three members of its team who earned their bachelor's degrees in 2017 and have transferred to UWF for their final season of eligibility. K Luke Jackson graduated from Missouri, DB Josh Marshall graduated from Troy and DB Jalen Spencer graduated from South Florida.
