LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The sixth-ranked University of West Florida women's soccer team improved its already perfect record to 4-0 with a 3-2 win over West Alabama on Friday evening, opening Gulf South Conference play. The Argos dominated on both sides of the pitch, taking 23 shots and allowing just 6.
Things started on a more strange note than UWF is used to, when UWA put in an own goal in the seventh minute to give West Florida a 1-0 lead, but
Leonie Kreil extended the UWF lead to 2-0 just moments later with her first goal of the season. Kreil got some help from senior midfielder
Georgia Bailey on the play, giving Bailey her first assist of the year.
The early scoring continued in the 16th minute when Anele Komani cut into UWF's lead on a solo effort, making the score 2-1. But that one-goal margin would not stand for long, as freshman
Jessica Quixley found a connection from
Deneisha Blackwood to put UWF ahead 3-1.
The goal was Quixley's second of the year, and the assist was Blackwood's first.
West Alabama struck again in the 79th minute with Ellen Sandstroem's first netter of the year, but it was too little, too late, and UWF finished off the 3-2 victory.
UWF senior and All-America keeper
Katelyn Burkhart earned her fourth win of the year in the victory, giving her 28 for her career – a mark that ties her with Sharon Kerby for the fifth-most in UWF history.
The Argonauts took 12 shots on goal compared to just 5 for West Alabama, and UWF had 10 corner kicks to UWA's 1.
UWF will make the trip to northern Alabama on Sunday for a matchup against Alabama Huntsville, with kickoff scheduled for 1 pm.
