UWF Opens GSC Play With Win Over Montevallo

Argos run win streak to six straight matches, ten straight sets

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF volleyball (9-4, 1-0 GSC) won its sixth straight match Tuesday, downing Montevallo (4-5, 0-2 GSC) 3-0 to open the conference schedule. The team has now won 15 of its last 17 sets, including 10 consecutive, dating back to last weekend's Carr Racop Invitational.

Reigning GSC Offensive Player of the Week Rachel Neblett once again starred, hitting .600 for the match and finishing with 9 kills plus 1 service ace. Taylor Hall also finished with 9 kills.

UWF raced out to a 14-7 lead at the first timeout of the opening set on the strength of 3 early kills by Neblett and 2 by Jordyn Poppen. The Argos were the more efficient team early, registering 8 kills on 13 attacks and hitting .615 in jumping out to the 14-7 advantage. The team grew the lead to as large as 13 at 23-10. The Argos forced 7 Falcon attack errors in the first set to cruise to a 25-13 opening win.

Neblett, Caleigh Morrison and Taylor Hall each finished the first with 3 kills. Monique StCyr notched 10 assists in the first set. West Florida outhit Montevallo .571 to .148 to open the match.

Montevallo rebounded in the second set, establishing a 10-7 lead to force a West Florida timeout. Back-to-back kills by Hall equalized the score at 11. Neblett added back-to-back kills at 14-14 to put the Argos up by a pair before sending home another kill to put the team up 18-15.

Montevallo tightened the second set up at 20-19 before kills by Poppen and Hall inflated the lead back to 3. Hall chipped in a key block right after her kill to essentially the ice the set at 23-19. The Argos wrapped it up at 25-21 on a kill by Morrison. Morrison, Hall and Neblett all finished with 4 kills in the set. StCyr added 13 more assists.

Hall scored 2 kills and Neblett added her 2nd block of the match to help UWF to a 13-7 lead in the third. The Argos maintained the lead the rest of the way, never letting it dip below 3. The Argos surfed to a 25-18 victory capped by back-to-back blocks from Mackenzie Chrisman and Poppen to close the match.

StCyr finished the match with 32 assists and 9 digs. Nadine Williams led the Argos with 12 digs. Sarah Hayman finished with 10 plus 1 service ace. Each team finished with 5 blocks. UWF hit .302 as a team, their 3rd highest percentage of the season.

The Argos take to the road this weekend, continuing GSC play at North Alabama at 5:00 pm Friday and Alabama - Huntsville at 1:00 pm Saturday.
