PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF volleyball (9-4, 1-0 GSC) continues its conference schedule this weekend at North Alabama (11-2, 1-0 GSC) Friday at 5:00 pm and Alabama Huntsville (10-4, 1-0 GSC) Saturday at 1:00 pm. The Argos have won 15 of their last 17 sets, including 10 consecutive, dating back to last weekend's Carr Racop Invitational and are riding a 6 match winning streak.
ARGOS CATCHING FIRE
* The Argos went 4-0 at the Carr Racop Invitational last weekend, defeating Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western, both by finals of 3-1, on Friday. The team swept 6 straight sets on Sunday vs. Newman and host Arkansas - Fort Smith to finish the tournament 4-0.
* Rachel Neblett, who hit over .400 in every match at the Carr Racop and totaled 66 kills Friday and Saturday, was named tournament MVP and was later named GSC Offensive Player of the Week for the 2nd time this month and the 3rd time in her career.
* Courtney Markes and Monique StCyr were also named to the All-Carr Racop tournament team. Markes racked up 37 kills and 45 digs in 4 matches. StCyr finished the weekend with 183 assists.
* UWF won its sixth straight match Tuesday, downing Montevallo (4-5, 0-2 GSC) 3-0 to open the conference schedule. Reigning GSC Offensive Player of the Week Rachel Neblett once again starred, hitting .600 for the match and finishing with 9 kills plus 1 service ace. Taylor Hall also finished with 9 kills.
* The Argos received 18 votes in the latest AVCA poll and sit just outside the Top 25 in NCAA Division II.
CURRENT GSC/NCAA LEADERS
* Rachel Neblett ranks 1st in the GSC and 10th nationally with a hitting percentage of .422. Caleigh Morrison ranks 6th in the GSC with a .331 hitting percentage.
* In the GSC, Neblett ranks 4th with 3.62 kills per set and 8th with 0.45 service aces per set. Neblett is tied for 17th nationally with 170 total kills.
* Monique StCyr ranks 3rd in the GSC with 9.53 assists per set.
* In the GSC, Morrison ranks 5th with 0.88 blocks per set. Mackenzie Chrisman ranks 9th with 0.79 blocks per set.
* Logan Kael ranks 8th in the GSC with 4.32 digs per set.
OPENING GSC ROAD PLAY
* UWF opens its GSC road schedule September 22 at Flowers Hall on the campus of UNA at 5:00 pm... The match is the second of sixteen GSC contests the Argos will play this year and the first GSC match on the road.... The match is the 5th of 7 straight at home for UNA. The Lions are 5-0 on the homestand so far… The Argos are 8-7 since 2001 at UNA… The Argos have won 5 of the last 6 meetings in Florence.
* UWF journeys to Alabama Huntsville to take on the Chargers in Spragin Hall Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm… The Argos are 13-2 since 2001 in Huntsville and have won 13 straight matches there dating back to 2003.
* Since Melissa Wolter took over the UWF volleyball program prior to the 2003 season, West Florida has been nearly unstoppable in GSC play, owning a 169-24 record... Last year the Argonauts went 17-3 in GSC action and 7-3 in conference road play... UWF currently has a 62-match winning streak during regular season home games against conference opponents... The last loss for UWF in a GSC regular season home game came against North Alabama on October 24, 2009... UWF won six consecutive GSC Championships from 2008-2013... UWF currently owns the longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC, which currently stands at 13 (not including 2004 season shortened by Hurricane Ivan)... Valdosta State and North Alabama are tied for the second longest active streak of 20-win seasons in the GSC at three... UWF has reached 11 consecutive NCAA South Regional Tournaments.
SCOUTING NORTH ALABAMA
* UNA is 11-2 on the season and 1-0 in GSC play… The team started the season 2-2 and has won 9 in a row since… UNA fell to #2 SW Minnesota in the opening match of the year and dropped a contest to unranked USC-Aiken 3 matches later....The Lions' resume includes an early season win over #11 Wheeling Jesuit… UNA won its 1st GSC match of the season 3-1 September 19 over Lee
* UNA returns 11 players (4 starters) from last season's squad, which finished 29-6 and advanced to the NCAA South Region Tournament after winning the GSC title, the 18th GSC championship in UNA history.
* Seniors Jessica Austin, Lexie Bradley and Ashtyn Kapovich were named to the preseason All-GSC team...UNA had 3 players selected to the All-GSC Preseason team, the high number in the conference… received 9 first place votes and selected to win GSC in preseason coaches' poll… only other team to receive first place votes was UWF (4). Argos were narrowly picked (141-136) to finish 2nd in the conference behind UNA.
* North Alabama ranks 1st in the GSC (22nd NCAA Div. II) in hitting percentage (.250), 2nd GSC (17th NCAA Div. II) in assists (13.25 per set), 3rd in opponent aces per set (1.02), and 4th in digs per set (17.04)
* Jessica Austin ranks 2nd in the GSC in hitting percentage (.400)... Lexie Bradley ranks 10th with a .309 mark...Bradley leads the GSC with 4.22 kills per set and ranks 17th nationally in the category… Austin ranks 2nd at 3.75… Jayden DavilaMcClary leads the GSC with 11.46 assists per set… Bradley ranks 9th in the GSC (32nd NCAA Div. II) with 0.44 service aces per set… Ashtyn Kapovitch is 2nd in the GSC with 5.23 digs per set. She ranks 19th nationally with 251 total digs. Austin set the single match season-high in NCAA Div. II volleyball with a .938 mark vs. Alcorn September 12.
* The Argos are 25-14 since 2001 vs. UNA and 18-13 in conference play.
SCOUTING ALABAMA HUNTSVILLE
* Alabama Huntsville is 10-4 this season and 1-0 in conference play… The team has won 5 of its 6 home matches so far this year… The squad won 8 of 9 to start this season but have dropped 3 of their last 4, including a Sept. 15 matchup with #15 Central Missouri (0-3) and a Sept. 16 matchup vs. #23 Washburn (0-3)... The Chargers won their first GSC contest of the year vs. Shorter Sept. 19 3-1.
* Voted to finish 7th in the GSC in the preseason coaches' poll… return 16 from last year's squad… 4 newcomers on this year's team… Abby Brooks and Sabrina Duncan were each named to the GSC Top Newcomers list… no preseason All-GSC picks on the roster.
