Argos Fall to No. 15 Columbus State on the Road

UWF ranked No. 23, stands at 6-2 on the season

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The 23rd-ranked University of West Florida women's soccer team fell to No. 15 Columbus State on the road on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, UWF stands at 6-2 for the season.

"We got outworked by a really good team today, but we see the potential," head coach Joe Bartlinski said. "We just have to put our nose to the grindstone."

Despite the 4-0 loss, UWF outshot Columbus State 13-11 and outcornered the Lady Cougars 7-6, while matching CSU's 5 shots on goal. West Florida has outshot each of its eight opponents this year and has never had fewer shots on goal than the opposition in a single game.

West Florida held off a relentless CSU attack that ranks fourth in all of Division II until the 41st minute, when Cassandra Wade headed in the first of her two goals on the day. UWF was on the unlucky side of things when Wade struck again after the halftime break, in the 51st minute on a shot from outside the box that banked off the left post and squeezed in the goal.

But UWF wasn't without its chances to find the net. Senior Kaljit Atwal bookended the first half with a pair of shots on goal, the first of which came five minutes into the match and the second came with three minutes remaining in the half. Junior Deneisha Blackwood put on a strong attack in the first 45, with three total shots and one on goal.

The Argos' closest chance came in the 72nd minute after a corner kick from Blackwood found Jessica Quixley, whose shot was saved by the CSU back line just inches off the goal line.

Brooke Nail and Flo Spano each chipped in with a goal late in the second half to cap off the scoring for CSU.

West Florida will host Valdosta State on Sunday, October 1, at 12:30 pm for Military Appreciation Day.
