BOX SCORE
BOCA RATON, Fla. – A mix of newcomers and familiar faces helped No. 8 West Florida take a 3-1 win over Palm Beach Atlantic in Boca Raton, Florida, on Sunday morning. With the victory, UWF improved to 2-0 on the year and wrapped up a weekend during which the Argonauts outscored Lynn and PBA 6-1.
Palm Beach Atlantic took the lead in the 22nd minute with a Kelly Giddes goal, after Giddes was able to find the net after a rebounded shot. PBA's lead would last through the first 45 minutes, but the second half would belong to UWF.
Junior forward
Deneisha Blackwood's third goal of the season evened the score in the 55th minute when she took a left-footed shot from 12 yards out, and that would be just the beginning of West Florida's dominance in the half.
Just 23 minutes later, freshman
Jessica Quixley's game-winner found the net with a volley off a corner kick from sophomore
Leonie Kreil. It marked the first goal of Quixley's career, and would be Kreil's first of two assists for the day.
Her fellow sophomore
Isabella Garcia-Salas picked up her first goal of the year in the 84th minute, giving UWF the final 3-1 lead. Garcia-Salas positioned herself perfect after a shot from Kreil that rebounded off the PBA keeper and stayed inside the six-yard box, where Garcia-Salas converted the second goal of her career.
It was an offensive onslaught from both sides, with UWF and PBA combining for 34 shots, 12 corner kicks and 4 goals in the match. The difference came in the quality of shot the each team put on – UWF had 12 shots on goal, compared to just 1 for the Sailfish.
West Florida will play its home-opener against Albany State on Wednesday at 5 pm at the UWF Soccer Complex.
