PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Florida men's soccer team won on a hot afternoon with a goal coming just seconds after kick off in overtime. After a 3-1 loss to Tampa, the Argonauts bounce back against Flagler with a strong home performance.
The Argonauts finished the game with a total of 15 shots and eight on frame. Flagler totaled six shots, two testing the goalkeeper
Jacob Murray.
Flagler started the game slow, while the Argonauts came out strong forcing 10 shots on goal and three corners. The Argonauts were dangerous in and around the box, with shots from
Ed Chappe,
Sean Hoffstatter, and
Rafael Godoi testing the Flagler goalkeeper Mel Broughton. Broughton made a spectacular save to deny Hoffstatter's header off of a cross from
Shawn Sanon in the 27th minute. The Argonauts continued to threaten throughout the first half with chances going just wide or high, while Flagler's front line seemed unable to connect.
Flagler looked more dangerous coming out in the second half. Juan Membreno combined at the top of the box with a give-go with Rostand Ndong finding Membreno again, who took a touch past
Arick Gonzalez and slotted the finish in the lower left corner past the out-stretched hand of goalkeeper
Jacob Murray.
As the game went on both sides battled to gain the upper hand in the heat testing both team's fitness level. Flagler's Samba Diop, Jonathan Brasiliano, and Juan Membreno were handed yellow cards.
Shawn Sanon also received a yellow for UWF. Sanon remained dangerous throughout the game on the right side, consistently whipping the ball in with his right foot causing problems for the Flagler defense. Late in the game Sanon was able to get past his defender crossing a threatening ball into the box where it deflected to Hoffstatter, who headed the ball down to
Rafael Godoi near the right post of the goal. Godoi was able to poke the ball past goalkeeper Mel Broughton to tie the game up with just five minutes left.
The late goal from the Argonauts shifted momentum, and just seconds into overtime
Owen Munro was able to find Godoi, who tucked the ball past Broughton to win the game.
The Argonauts move to 1-1 in the 2017 season. Flagler also move to 1-1. UWF will be away to Rollins on Friday.
