Branch's Double-Double Key To UWF Overtime Win

Halee Nieman had 15 points, including a steal a 3-pointer to force extra session

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Halee Nieman made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime and Chloe Branch posted a double-double to lift UWF to a 69-68 come-from-behind win over West Georgia at the UWF Field House Friday night.

Branch collected her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds as UWF (11-6, 6-4 Gulf South) snapped a 2-game losing skid. Shami Goodman had a career-high six 3-pointers for 18 points and Nieman totaled 15. Courtney Meyer grabbed 16 rebounds with four blocks.

With UWG holding a 62-59 lead and 17 seconds remaining in regulation, Goodman had two looks at a potential game-tying shot. The Wolves got the rebound with 3 seconds left and called timeout to advance the ball into the front court. Courtney Meyer committed a foul with 2.2 seconds left but the Wolves were not in the bonus yet, meaning they had to inbound one more time.

On the next play, Nieman ripped the ball from Kilah Nixon on the inbounds into the backcourt, dribbled once and threw up a running 25-footer that banked in as time expired to knot the game at 62.

In overtime, the Argos scored the first four points before the Wolves tied it at 66 with 1:22 left. Goodman buried a 23-footer with 1:00 left to put UWF ahead 69-66. A'kia Harris got an offensive putback with 39.1 remaining to pull UWG within one.

UWF turned the ball over, allowing the Wolves a prime chance to win the game. Harris drove the lane and missed the running jumper but the Wolves retained possession after the ball went out of bounds. With 1.2 tics on the clock, Harris took a contested shot from the lane that was off the mark.

UWF shot 35 percent in the game, made a season-high nine triples and was 12-of-14 at the free throw line. The 86 pct effort at the line was the best for the Argos this season.. The Argonauts held a 47-40 rebounding edge.

UWG (10-7, 6-4) got 22 points from Jessica Brown and 10 from Aysha Harris. The Wolves shot 42 percent and made five 3-pointers.

The Wolves led 41-33 at halftime before the Argos regained the lead, 50-49, on a Belle Bistrow three with 4:13 left in the third.

UWF hosts Auburn-Montgomery on Sunday afternoon at the UWF Field House. Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m.
