PENSACOLA, Fla. – In a battle of top-10 teams, the No. 10/5 UWF football team was unable to get the offensive spark it needed, falling to No. 4 West Georgia, 27-7, before a record crowd at Blue Wahoos Stadium Saturday night.
UWF (5-2, 3-1 Gulf South) finished with 295 yards of total offense and 218 through the air.
Sam Vaughn was 18-for-35 with three 20-plus yard completions but also had a number of big plays fall incomplete.
Ishmel Morrow led all players with six catches for 98 yards, including a 37-yarder that went for a touchdown in the second quarter.
UWG (7-0, 4-0) was led by Devontae Jackson's 224 rushing yards and two touchdowns. His 4-yard run in the third quarter and 45-yarder late in the fourth allowed the Wolves to extend their lead from 13-7 to the final tally.
The Argonauts picked off Candler once and forced a Jackson fumble to extend their streak of games forcing a turnover to nine-consecutive games. UWF leads the country with 11 fumbles forced this season.
UWG went ahead 6-0 early in the second quarter after Omar Cervantes made field goals on their first two drives, connecting from 24 and 32 yards. The Wolves stretched their lead to 13-0 when Candler found Taylor Turner for a 34-yard passing touchdown.
The Argos answered on the ensuing drive with Morrow's score to trim the margin to 13-6 going into the halftime.
UWF's
Jamel Jackson intercepted Candler on UWG's first possession of the second half and returned the ball to just shy of midfield. But the Argos were unable to get a first down and turned the ball over on downs at the 50. Jackson's scoring run from the four came eight players later.
The standing-room only crowd of 6,838 was a new Blue Wahoos Stadium record and the largest in the GSC this season.
UWF will return to action next Saturday when it plays host to Florida Tech (5-2, 2-2) in the third annual Coastal Classic. Kickoff at Blue Wahoos Stadium is set for 4:00 p.m. and the game will be available on the UWF Sports Network, ESPN Pensacola 94.5 FM.
