PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's soccer celebrated Senior Day with a 4-1 comeback victory vs. the Alabama Huntsville Chargers Sunday afternoon. The win extended the team's current unbeaten streak to ten games.
The Argos faced adversity as they acknowledged the careers of nine players, including redshirt senior
Jacob Murray. Murray, the reigning United Soccer Coaches Player of the Week, was a late scratch (illness). He was replaced by
Jihad Gomes, who recorded five saves. The Chargers challenged him with 14 shots on the day.
Gomes made an early stand for the UWF defense, stopping a penalty from Guy Clennett at the 42-minute mark to preserve a scoreless game. The teams went to halftime 0-0. The Argos outshot the Chargers 7-4 in the first period.
UAH (6-6-1, 4-3-1 GSC) broke through early in the second. Clennett got one by Gomes in the 53rd minute off a feed from Connor Young.
Rafael Godoi evened the score 13 minutes later on a penalty after
Mathias Ferraz was taken down in the box. The goal was Godoi's fourth.
Andrew Wentz put UWF up 2-1 with 20 minutes to go when he took a long cross from
Isaiah Lopez and lasered it by Charger keeper Myles Fullen. The goal was also his fourth.
Sean Hoffstatter added his GSC-best 12th and 13th goals of the season late as insurance.
The Argos honored Murray,
Barrett Mills,
Alik Morgan,
Gavin Gillies,
Sergio Otalora,
Chandler Castleman Kam Bethell,
Arick Gonzalez and
Zac Bennett at halftime. UWF has now outscored opponents 40-6 over the ten-match unbeaten streak. The Argos outshot the Chargers 15-14 in the game.
The Argos (9-2-2, 7-0-1 GSC) have now won seven conference games in a season for the first time since 2015. UWF, the leader in the conference, head into a crucial match Saturday at Spring Hill (11-1, 7-0 GSC). The Badgers currently stand at second in the conference. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Mobile.
