No.12 West Florida loses match one in Crossover Tournament

Florida Southers wins 3-0 over the Argonauts

ORLANDO, Fla. -  No.12 UWF (18-5, 10-1 GSC) falls to Florida Southern (16-8, 9-5 SSC) in three sets. The Argos had their moments of control in the match, but most of the game they were reacting to what the Mocs were doing.

This was UWF first loss since September and it broke a 10-match winning streak for the Argos. This is also the Argos first 3-0 loss this season.

The seniors lead the UWF offense tonight. Nadine Williams led the team with nine kills, followed by Mackenzie Chrisman and Makila York each with six kills. The Argos hit just .112 in the match as a team while FSC hit a .215.

The Argos opened in the first set with a 4-0 lead, but the Mocs went on a run of their own tying the match shortly after making it 6-6 and a back-and-forth set. UWF went on one more small run of three points to give themselves the lead again 10-8, but the Mocs followed with their own three point run to tie the set 11-11. From there, the Argos battled and continued to keep it a one point set until FSC capitalized on UWF errors and finished the set on a four point run ending the set 25-19.

In the second, UWF dug an early hole for themselves 1-5. They quickly climbed out of the hole and tied the set 8-8 with a kill by Caleigh Morrison. With a couple of attacking errors on FSC, the Argos gained a two point lead 11-9. The momentum swung back on the Argos side with a quick sideout and a four point run to follow. UWF built a five point lead 15-10 and the Mocs answered. FSC went on a eight point run with five of those points coming from UWF errors giving them the lead 18-15. At set point for the Mocs, UWF went on a last chance run of three points but lost 25-22.

UWF trailed in the third set from the start 2-6 which turned into 6-15 shortly after. The Argos started their comeback as they trailed 21-14 with a four point run to make it 21-18 as UWF capitalized on FSC errors this time. The Mocs were at set point again and the Argos fought to get a couple more points before Florida Southern won the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Morrison and Chrisman led the team in blocks each with three for the match. Logan Kael led the defensive with 12 digs on the night followed by Brogan Wallin with 10 digs.

UWF will return to action tomorrow in the South Region Crossover Tournament in Orlando, Fla. with a 12:15 pm match against Saint Leo and a 7:00 pm match against No.6 Tampa.
