PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 9/12 University of West Florida men's basketball opens its 2018-19 home schedule vs. Spring Hill Tuesday at the UWF Field House. Tip vs. the Badgers is slated for 7:30 p.m.
The Argos are coming off a tough weekend at the Saint Leo Crossover Classic, where they dropped a pair of decisions vs. Tampa and the host Lions. Tuesday's game will be the first of three straight at home for the Argonauts. The team will take on CBU on Nov. 29 and Union (Tenn.) Dec. 1.
ARGOS LOOK TO CONTINUE SUCCESS IN HOME OPENERS
* UWF has won four straight home openers, including each of its first three home openers under head coach
Jeff Burkhamer.
* This year will mark the third time in the last five seasons that the Badgers have been the first opponent in Pensacola for UWF.
* West Florida is 5-3 this decade in home openers. Last year, the Argos defeated Albany State 77-68 in the first game at the UWF Field House Nov. 11. Five players who appeared in that game are active for the Argonauts this year.
BENSON CLOSES IN ON ALL-TIME ASSIST RECORD
* With thirteen assists this season, senior guard
Rashaan Benson has continued his pursuit of the all-time West Florida career assists record. Benson is at 409 career dimes, just two from matching record-holder Deondre Boynton (411).
* Benson has scored 56 points this season, and now sits in seventh all-time in career points with 949. He is closing in on Marcus Tanner and Jerry Fogle, who are fifth and sixth on the all-time scoring list with 961 and 958 points respectively.
ARGONAUTS STUMBLE IN SAINT LEO
* The Argonauts fell to the Tampa Spartans 81-63 at the Marion Bowman Activities Center in Saint Leo despite double-figure scoring efforts from Benson,
Jon Brown, and
Alassane Kah Friday. Benson scored a team-high 19 points.
* UWF men's basketball dropped its finale at the Saint Leo Crossover Classic 69-65 to the host Lions Saturday.
Maxwell Benoit led UWF with a season-high 15 points.
SCOUTING SPRING HILL
* The Badgers stand at 2-2 on the year. The squad dropped back-to-back contests at the GSC-SIAC Crossover Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 vs. Union and Shorter before bouncing back with wins vs. Pensacola Christian and Mobile Nov. 15 and Nov. 17.
* SHC is under the leadership of Craig Kennedy, who has served as the Assistant Athletics Director at SHC since 2015. This is his first year as the head men's basketball coach.
* UWF is 8-0 vs. Spring Hill since 2014. Last year, the Argonauts defeated the Badgers 71-57 at Spring Hill Nov. 21 and 91-59 at home Dec. 10.
