PENSACOLA, Fla. – No. 9/12 UWF men's basketball got back on the winning track Tuesday at the UWF Field House, downing Spring Hill 79-69.
Rashaan Benson led the way with 21 points. He also recorded three assists and now has 412 for his career, the most in UWF men's basketball history.
"Excited that we won," said UWF head coach
Jeff Burkhamer. "They just keep coming at you. I thought they played well. Playing against the zone, you've got to make some shots and fortunately we made some shots against them. We kind of figured out as the game went on how to attack them."
Benson surpassed Deondre Boynton (411) for first place on the all-time UWF career assists list in his first chance in front of the UWF home crowd this season.
"It's a blessing," said the senior from Memphis, Tenn. "It's really a credit to all the teammates I've had over the last three or four years. They've got to make the shot for me to get the assist, so I pretty much owe them everything for the record."
UWF closed the first on an 13-2 run to build a 39-30 lead going to the locker room. Benson led the way in the first with nine points and two assists.
Spring Hill began the second on a 19-10 run to draw even at 49-49. The Argos responded with a 17-5 streak of their own though, opening a 66-54 edge. UWF finished the game on a 30-20 run overall.
Jon Brown notched a season-best 20 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and 8-of-8 shooting from the line. The freshman has now scored in double figures in three of the first five games in his UWF career.
Spring Hill (2-3) was led by Andrew Dotson, who scored 13 points. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Badgers. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Argos.
The 79 points were the most in a single game for UWF this season. The team knocked down a season-high 10 three-pointers and grabbed a season-best 45 rebounds.
Henri Ventoniemi grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds.
The Argonauts (3-2) will return after the Thanksgiving holiday for a Nov. 29 matchup vs. Christian Brothers (3-1). Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m. in the UWF Field House.
