MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A final comeback effort fell just short for UWF men's soccer in the GSC Tournament final Sunday. The Argos dropped the contest 3-2 vs. Spring Hill.
Jerry Wiltshire,
Rafael Godoi and
Jacob Murray were named to the All-Gulf South Tournament team. UWF will learn if its season will continue tomorrow during the NCAA Regional selection show at 6:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. CT.
Spring Hill built a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Alexander Lipinski and Matthew Moreno. The Argos and Badgers each finished the opening period with five shots (two on goal). UWF got back in the game in the 58th minute when
Andrew Wentz scored his sixth goal of the season by taking advantage of a defensive miscue in the box by the Badger back line.
Spring Hill extended their lead to 3-1 in the 86th minute when Lipinski converted a penalty.
Kameron Bethell scored on a volley just over a minute later to bring the Argos back within one. The goal was his fourth of the season. A wild final sequence for UWF off a corner opportunity came up just short, and Spring Hill held on for the win despite being outshot 12-9. The hard-fought match featured 27 fouls.
Wiltshire and Murray add the All-Tournament team recognition to their impressive accolades this season. Both were named All-GSC during the regular season. The Argo program has now had 66 All-GSC Tournament selections since 1995.
UWF has now played in 10 GSC finals in the the last 13 seasons, the most appearances of any team in the conference in that time frame. During that span, the Argos have met five different opponents in the conference final.
West Florida's season through the conference final includes 57 total team goals, the seventh-most in program history. The season featured All-GSC First Team selections for Wiltshire,
Ed Chappe and
Sean Hoffstatter as well as Second Team selections for Murray and
Kameron Bethell. Head coach
Bill Elliott earned GSC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time.
Hoffstatter's 40 points this season are the most by a UWF player since Jimmy McHenry registered 45 in 2007. He earned the fifth GSC Player of the Year award for the program since 1995.
The Argonauts (11-4-3) will learn the fate of their potential Regional bid tomorrow. The NCAA Selection Show will be available to view
