Women's Soccer Wins 2018 GSC Championship

The Argos will Make their 17th Appearance in the NCAA Tournament Next Weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – West Florida beat Montevallo 1-0 in a nail-biter contest for the Gulf South Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon. UWF has won the GSC Championship eleven times in program history, the most of any college in the conference. The Argos are now 20-0 this season, and will head into the NCAA Tournament for a fourth consecutive year.

GAME STATS:  Senior Elizabeth Vickers scored the lone goal of the match in the 63rd minute when she received the ball inside the box, and buried it into the back of the net. Jessica Quixley received the assist on the play, after she sent a beautiful pass into the box for Vickers. Both Vickers and Quixley have come on strong as of late for the Argonauts. Vickers' goal in today's match was her sixth goal of the year, and fourth in the last six games. Quixley has recorded at least one point in the last four matches for the Argos.

Esthefanny Barreras tacked on another shutout performance to her resumé with her eleventh shutout of the season, and has recorded a shutout in five consecutive games. She faced four shots on goal, and finished with four saves. UWF dominated the possession of the game, and constantly put pressure on Montevallo's Goalkeeper, Annie Mason. West Florida outshot Montevallo 21-7. The Argos took a total of ten corner kicks, while allowing the Falcons to only take three corners.

NEXT UP: The Argonauts will return to action next week in the NCAA South Region Tournament. UWF was ranked first in the latest regional rankings and is expected to host two teams in a neutral-site contest at the UWF Soccer Complex in the first round, with the Argos playing the winner of that game in the second round. The NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship field will be announced on NCAA.com Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. Central Time.
