HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – UWF men's basketball hung around late but could not withstand a final push by Alabama Huntsville at Spragins Hall Saturday. The host Chargers closed the game on a 10-2 run to grab a 62-52 win.
Jon Brown and
Maxwell Benoit each finished with 12 points.
Brown posted seven points to lead UWF in a hotly-contested defensive battle in the first half. The Chargers took a 28-24 lead into the break. UWF was an efficient 4-for-9 (.444) beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes while limiting the home squad to just 4-of-16 (.250) from deep. Benoit scored five points in the first.
The Chargers opened a 48-39 lead nine minutes into the second, but UWF battled back. The team reeled off an 11-4 run over the next five minutes to fight within 52-50. Benoit scored seven of the team's 11 points during the rally.
UAH (7-2, 2-1 GSC) refused to break though, letting the lead evaporate but never entirely disappear. The home side responded with a 10-0 run of its own to seal the game. The Chargers were paced by JJ Kaplan, who scored a game-high 20 points and collected 11 rebounds. Sam Orf chipped in 14 points.
Brett Carter Jr. scored seven points and recorded three rebounds plus one assist.
Cameron Cox scored six points while dishing a season-best four assists.
Jarrett Henderson posted four rebounds, three assists and two points.
The Argos (3-7, 0-3 GSC) will look to bounce back with a win at Lee (4-5, 2-0 GSC) Monday. Tip is slated for 7:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CT. The Argos return home Dec. 30 vs. LaGrange College for the final game of the 2018 calendar year.
