Brewer Powers UWF To 72-69 Win Over Hometown UAH Squad

The Argos overcame an 11-point deficit in the final quarter for the second-consecutive game

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Toni Brewer scored 23 points and combined with Halee Nieman to will UWF to a 72-69 come-from-behind win over Alabama Huntsville at Spragins Hall on Saturday.

UWF fell behind by as many as 16 early in the third quarter and trailed 64-53 with 6:40 left before mounting a big push.

The Argonauts outscored the Chargers 43-27 in the final 17 minutes, including 10-0 over the final 2:03 for their third-consecutive win in the Space City and fourth-straight over UAH.

The big rally cry came in a timeout called by UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton just after the Chargers made their 12th 3-pointer of the game to go up 69-62.

"I called (the timeout) and talked about what we were going to run and what personnel we needed to run," Yelton said. "Halee made a layup and then followed that with another on her own missed free throw to steal a possession.

"We got the stop we needed and then Toni did what she does best by drawing contact and finishing the three-point-play."

That play by Brewer also came on an offensive rebound as she tied the game at 69 with 1:11 remaining.

After another stop, Nieman curled down the lane for a one-handed scoop layup to put UWF up 71-69 with 40.9 on the clock.

UWF defended the ensuing possession very well and forced Baylee Johnson into a 25-footer with the shot clock at one and game clock at three that caromed off the front rim before Belle Bistrow got the rebound.

"We played our best basketball down the stretch – executing our defensive game plan, getting hustle plays from everyone and Halee played outstanding the last five minutes," Yelton said.

UWF (8-2, 2-1 Gulf South) shot 47 percent for the game but an eye-popping 59 percent on 17-of-29 in the second half.

Nieman had 10 of her 19 points in the final 5:15 to finish 8-of-12 shooting. Danielle Norquest was solid off the bench with 13 points while Bistrow made three of UWF's six 3-pointers.

The Argonauts outrebounded the Chargers 37-31.

UAH (4-5, 2-1) made 12 3-pointers and shot 43 percent. Aryn Sanders led the Chargers with 24 points which included 4-of-4 from outside.

UWF will wrap up the December schedule in Cleveland, Tenn. at Lee (7-2, 2-0) on Monday evening. Tip-off at Walker Arena is set for 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
