Argos Starts Season's Second Half Sunday vs. LaGrange

UWF looks to close 2018 on a high note vs. the Panthers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF men's basketball returns to action Sunday vs. LaGrange College. Tip in the UWF Field House is set for 4:00 p.m.
 
The Argos (3-8, 0-4 GSC) will look to get back on track vs. the Panthers (6-4, 2-1 USAS) after dropping back-to-back GSC road games Dec. 15 and 17 at Alabama Huntsville and Lee. The game will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
 
The game will be just the second at home for UWF in the month of December. The program hosts five home games in the month of January beginning with a 4:00 p.m. contest Jan. 5 vs. GSC rival Montevallo.
 
BENSON CONTINUES ASCENT THROUGH CAREER RECORD BOOK
* Senior point guard Rashaan Benson continues to climb the through the Argo career record book. The HomeLife Academy alum is now third on the career steals list with 127. He will have a chance to surpass former teammate DJ Thorpe (128) for second on the list when the Argos return to action Sunday. He sits just 12 steals behind Deondre Boynton, the program's all-time leader at 139.
* Benson is also within striking distance of third-place on the program's career scoring list. With 159 points this season, he stands at 1,052 for his career. He is one of just four Argos ever to score 1,000 points and needs just 34 to surpass Mike Morgan (1,085) for third in the record book.
* The point guard's consistency and durability have helped him to heights few have reached. He is second in Argo history in career field goal attempts (962) and should surpass the record set by Terrence Harris (999) in early 2019.
 
GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE LEADERS
* The Argos are third in the Gulf South in turnover margin (+2.73). West Florida currently ranks fifth in the Gulf South in opponent field goal percentage (.438). The team is also fifth in opponent three-point percentage (.333).
* Benson is currently eighth in the conference with 14.5 points per game.
* Jarrett Henderson is tied for ninth in the GSC with 6.8 rebounds per game and 75 total rebounds.
* Jon Brown is eighth in the conference in field goal percentage (.791). Benson is 10th with a .769 mark.
* Henri Ventoniemi is tied for seventh in the GSC with eight blocked shots this season. Jon Brown and Alassane Kah rank in the conference's top-15 with six.
* Benson and Brown are tied for 11th in the conference with 1.4 steals per game each.
 
UWF BACK IN ACTION AT THE FIELD HOUSE
* UWF played just three home games prior to the holiday break. The team will play six home games from Dec. 30-Jan. 31.
* The Argos are 1-2 at home this season, but have been very successful in the Field House over the last three seasons. UWF is 26-5 over the last three years at home.
* The Argos are looking to snap a losing streak that has run to six straight games. Three of the six losses during the streak have come by one possession, and four of the team's eight losses this season have come by four points or less.
 
SCOUTING LAGRANGE COLLEGE
* LaGrange College is based in LaGrange, Ga. and competes in the USA South Conference. This is the first ever meeting between the Argos and the Panthers.
* LaGrange is 6-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play this season. The Panthers are 3-0 at home, 2-2 away and 1-2 on neutral floors this season.
* The Panthers most recently competed at the Daytona Beach Shootout Dec. 19-20. The squad split a pair of games, winning 80-73 in OT vs. Brevard before falling 76-70 vs. St. Joseph (Connecticut).
* The Panthers are led by Gary Bishop, who averages 14.0 PPG. Jalen McCallum has enjoyed a great all-around season with 11.9 PPG and 9.0 RPG. Five different Panthers are averaging at least 9.0 PPG.
* LaGrange is led by eighth-year head coach Kendal Wallace, who has taken the program to exciting heights. Under his leadership, LaGrange has qualified for four NCAA Division III National Tournaments and has won three USA South Conference championships.
