Coming off a 1-1 split to open Gulf South Conference play over the weekend, the UWF women's basketball team will play a pair of non-conference games this week, beginning Wednesday morning at 11 am against Tuskegee. On Saturday, the Argos will entertain No. 12 Columbus State. Both game will be at the UWF Field House.
FREE ADMISSION WEDNESDAY AT 11 AM
* Wednesday's game will tip-off at 11 am and offer free admission to all fans. They athletic department is also welcoming more than 200 area elementary school students to the game. The game is sponsored by Publix.
SANTA CLAUS AT THE FIELD HOUSE ON SATURDAY
* Saturday's game against No. 12 Columbus State will have a special visitor from the North Pole... Santa Claus will be available for individual, family and group pictures in the Field House lobby.
UWF SPLITS GSC GAMES WITH CBU, #1 UNION
* UWF split its first two conference games last week, defeating Christian Brothers, 81-46, before suffering an 81-62 setback to No. 1 Union on Saturday.
* Against CBU, the Argos got out to a 16-9 lead midway through the opening quarter and then closed the frame on a 18-3 run, which included 11-consecutive to lead 34-12. The strong defense continued in the second quarter as the Argonauts held the Lady Bucs to nine points on 3-of-13 shooting and a pair of free throws.
Toni Brewer and
Halee Nieman combined for 44 points and 18 rebounds and led the inside surge that featured 40 points in the paint. Brewer posted her fifth double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Belle Bistrow made three 3-pointers and had 17 points, while
Anna Hall finished with eight points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. UWF never trailed and sht 48 percent, while holding the Lady Bucs to a season-low 27 percent.
* UWF led Union for just over seven minutes in the first quarter and tied the game three times in the second but were never able to regain the edge in the final 24 minutes. The Argos shot 38 percent and ended the game tied with 34 rebounds. Brewer had 17 points and five rebounds to lead UWF. Nieman scored 13 and grabbed six rebounds, while Hall netted 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Danielle Norquest had her second double-figure scoring game of the season with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 14 minutes. Union shot 54 percent and was 12-of-13 at the free throw line. Jada Smith scored a game-high 24 points with eight boards and six assists. Morgan Martin shot 8-of-10 and had her second double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
ABOUT TUSKEGEE
* Tuskegee is 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. TU has has won five-consecutive games and is 3-1 against Gulf South Conference foes - collecting wins over AUM twice and West Georgia, while suffering a loss to Montevallo.
* TU is averaging 61.1 points per game while making 36.3 percent of its shots from the floor. They have made just 11-of-74 shots from outside for 15 percent.
* Senior forward Alexis Carter leads the Golden Tigers with 18.0 points and 14.9 rebounds per game and is tied for fourth nationally with five double-doubles. She recorded a double-double in all three games last week, earning SIAC Player of the Week honors. She had a 23-point and 20-rebound effort in the conference opener at Clark Atlanta. A few days later, she scored 21 points and hauled in 16 boards against Georgia Southwestern State. The Columbus State transfer finalized her dominating weekend when she scored 16 points to go along with 13 rebounds.
* UWF is 4-0 all-time against Tuskegee, including three victories at the UWF Field House. Last season, the Argonauts defeated the Golden Tigers 83-56 in Pensacola on Nov. 30, and again 61-57 in Tuskegee on Dec. 5.
BREWER PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF IN 2016-17
* Senior
Toni Brewer redshirted last season and through the first month of this year, hasn't missed a beat from the play that earned her 2016-17 All-America honors.
* Brewer currently leads the team with 11.7 rebounds per game and five double-doubles, while ranking second with 16.0 points per game. She is tied for fourth nationally in double-doubles and 12th in rebounds per game.
* She enters the Tuskegee game with 1,261 points and 948 rebounds and ranks in the top six in UWF history in both categories.

HALL WITH TWO DOUBLE-DOUBLES AND A TRIPLE DOUBLE

Anna Hall transferred to UWF in the offseason from Saginaw Valley State and had posted a strong career in three seasons, with 658 points, 405 rebounds, 265 assists and 143 steals in 82 games. But in just seven games with the Argonauts, she has improved up those numbers.
* Hall is averaging 10.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game. She currently ranks 26th in the GSC in scoring, and in the top five in rebounding, assists and steals.
* Against Spring Hill, she recorded the second triple-double in UWF women's basketball history and just the second in Division 2 this year, posting 19 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and seven steals in the Argonauts' 105-74 victory.
* Nine days and a game later against Christian Brothers, she nearly did it again with eight points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. That gave her a second double-double of the season to go along with the triple-double. She only had one double-double in her previous three seasons,

* At the start of the season, UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton knew she would rely on a group of seniors to lead her young team. Those four -

Halee Nieman - have done their part thus far, combining for 72 percent of the scoring, 62 percent of the rebounding, 62 percent of the assists and 48 percent of the steals.
* Nieman leads the Gulf South Conference and ranks 43rd in the NCAA with 19.4 ppg. She has a 32-point game against Georgia College, along with 25- and 20-point performances as well this season.
* Brewer is second on the team with 16.0 ppg while ranking ninth nationally with 11.7 rpg. Her five double-doubles are fourth in the country.
* Bistrow has done her part from outside, making 20-of-41 3-pointers and is third on the team with 12.4 ppg. Her .488 shooting pct. from outside is first in the GSC and her 2.9 triples per game are first in the league and 39th nationally.
* Hall has stepped into the point guard spot with little trouble in her first season on campus and posted 10.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
HULMI HAS IMPRESSIVE START TO COLLEGE CAREER
* True freshman
Fanny Hulmi has started all five games and is fifth on the team with 6.8 points per game and second on the squad with eight steals. She is also fourth with 4.6 rebounds per game. She had 12p/10r/2a/1s in the opener against Albany State for her first career double-double and followed that with 6p/4r/2a/2s/1b a day later against FVSU. At the UNG Nighthawk Classic, she sparked the third and fourth-quarter run that lifted UWF to a win over Georgia College with five steals.
REBOUNDING CONTINUES TO BE A STRONG POINT FOR UWF
* Over the past four seasons, the Argonauts have always been a strong rebounding team. This year is no different as UWF ranks second in Division 2 with 35.0 defensive rebounds per game and is fourth with a 14.4 rebound margin.
* The Argos have finished the year no lower than 22nd in rebound margin over the past four seasons.
UWF STRONG AT HOME UNDER YELTON
* UWF has combined to win 60 games at the UWF Field House in 6-plus seasons under Stephanie Lawrence Yelton. The Argos are 54-17 in the last 5-plus years with a .768 winning pct. They have won at least 10 games four times in the last five years, going 10-2 in 2017-18 and 12-2 in 2016-17.
GSC FEATURES 20-GAME SCHEDULE
* The 2018-19 Gulf South Conference schedule will have teams play 20 league games for the second-consecutive season. Each of the 13 teams will play the other 12 once, with eight opponents in a home-and-away series.
* UWF's single-game opponents are its first four league games - Christian Brothers and Union at home and UAH and Lee on the road.
UWF PICKED THIRD IN GSC PRESEASON COACHES POLL
* The UWF women's basketball team received one first-place vote and was picked to finish third in the Gulf South Conference preseason poll.
* UWF is coming off an 18-12 2017-18 campaign that saw the Argonauts go 11-9 in conference play before advancing to the GSC Championship game for the second-consecutive season.
* Defending regular-season and tournament champion Union was picked first with 10 first-place votes and 142 total points. Valdosta State received two first-place votes and 124 points, just three ahead of UWF's 121.
* Lee was fourth with 115 points, while West Georgia, West Alabama and Delta State were in a close group of fifth through seventh. Alabama Huntsville and Christian Brothers tied for eighth, followed by Mississippi College, Auburn-Montgomery, Shorter and Montevallo.
BREWER, NIEMAN NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* Seniors Toni Brewer and Halee Nieman were each named to the 5-person preseason All-GSC team in a vote by the league's head coaches.
* Brewer, who redshirted in 2017-18, was an Honorable Mention All-America selection as a junior in 2016-17 when she averaged 13.7 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, while registering 19 double-doubles. The Huntsville, Alabama native enters her final season with 1,149 points and 866 rebounds.
* Nieman was a Second Team All-GSC selection last year and is the second-leading returning scorer in the league with 14.7 points per game. She had five double-doubles and scored in double figures in 23 times.
YELTON IN HER SEVENTH SEASON IN PENSACOLA
* UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton is in her seventh season at UWF in 2018-19 and has a 111-72 overall record. Her 111 wins rank third in program history.
* The Argonauts have five-consecutive winning seasons and have averaged 20.4 wins in those five years.
* The 102 wins from 2004-18 are the most in any 5-year stretch in program history.
YELTON NAMED TO WBCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS
* UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton was voted onto the WBCA Board of Directors as one of two Division II representatives in the summer. The BOD has eight members of the Executive Committee and 21 board members from all levels of women's college basketball.
* This is her first stint with the board and adds to her resume that includes serving on the NCAA South Region Advisory Committee and as a voter on the WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.
FORMER DIVISION I HEAD COACH JOINS UWF COACHING STAFF
* UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton added former Presbyterian head coach Todd Steelman to her staff in the off season. The Blue Hose won 25 games overall and 19 Big South Conference contests during his time at the Clinton, S.C. school.
* Former assistant coach LaQuanda Quick was named the head coach at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
