UWF Upsets #6 Union, 80-78, For Highest Ranked Win in School History

Shaniqua Magee’s career-high 18 helps UWF clinch a GSC Tournament berth

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Senior Shaniqua Magee saved her best for Senior Day, putting up a career-high 18 points to help lift the UWF women's basketball team to an 80-78 win over No. 6/12 Union at the UWF Field House Saturday.

The win over the Lady Bulldogs marked the highest ranked opponent the Argonauts have defeated in school history. The previous mark was a win over tenth-ranked Delta State in January of 2014.

In addition to Magee's big night, classmates Courtney Meyer had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Chloe Branch added nine points and eight boards. Junior Halee Nieman poured in 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while senior Jade Davis posted six points, five assists and zero turnovers in 37 minutes.

UWF (16-10, 11-8 Gulf South) secured one of the eight GSC Tournament berths. With a final regular-season game at Valdosta State next week, the Argonauts can finish anywhere from fifth to seventh in the league.

Union (24-3, 17-2) got a career-high 42 points from Chelsey Shumpert, who ended with eight 3-pointers and was 14-of-25 from the floor. The Lady Bulldogs clinched the GSC regular-season title as a result of Valdosta State's win over North Alabama on Saturday.

But on Saturday, UWF had one of its better shooting games of the season, going for a 43 percent clip while outrebounding the Lady Bulldogs 54-31.

UWF led by as many as seven points twice in the first quarter and was ahead by 10 late in the second before Shumpert hit a 25-footer to beat the halftime buzzer, trimming the Argo advantage to 45-38.

The margin stayed in single digits throughout the third but was sliced to 61-60 entering the final period. A Shumpert free throw and a 3-pointer by Annalea Little capped a 9-0 Lady Bulldog run and put the region's No. 1 ranked team up 64-61 with 8:04 to play.

UWF, which was listed at No. 10 in the first NCAA regional rankings this week, answered with eight unanswered that keyed a larger 14-2 run, flipping the script to the tune of a 75-66 lead with 4:04 remaining.

Union whittled the lead to two and had the ball with 17 seconds in the game. Everyone knew Shumpert would have the ball at the end and her three with the clock winding down was off the mark, setting off a jubilant celebration on the home team bench.

The Argonauts will face VSU (20-7, 14-5) on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time at The Complex in Valdosta, Ga. The game, along with the men's game immediately afterwards, will be streamed on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app as part of the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase.
