HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – No. 5 ranked UWF Women's Tennis are now 4-0 after defeating GSC opponent Alabama Huntsville 9-0 on Sunday. However, the day wasn't over as both UWF tennis teams faced GSC double headers on Sunday. The women finished the day cruising past the North Alabama Lions 8-1.
Due to an expectation of rain, UWF took on the Chargers indoors at the Athletic Club Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama. UWF battled to a 3-0 lead in doubles. On court two Samantha Echevarria and Diana Vlad came back from a break down to win 8-3. Lais Bicca and Isabella Calves managed a similar comeback after being down a break to win 8-6.
UWF was equally good in singles, with Diana Vlad only dropping one game in her contest against Van Beek. Newcomer Ines Nicault clenched her first match as an Argonaut, besting Cabanas 6-2, 6-0 on court two. After the match was decided, Samantha Echevarria, Valeria Mantilla, and Heather Mixon each defeated their opponents in straight sets. Senior Jordana Lujan erased a set and a break down to overcome a powerful Mehlich 3-6, 6-2, and 10-7.
There was no time to celebrate this victory as the Argos immediately hit the road to Decatur, Alabama to challenge the North Alabama Lions at the Jimmy John's Tennis Center.
For the second time of the day, the Argos raced to a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches. On court one, the Argentine duo Paula Coyos and Jordana Lujan eliminated Haycock and Link 8-3. Ines Nicault and Valeria Mantilla dominated Nele Seitz and Arroyo 8-2, while Samantha Echevarria and Diana Vlad defeated Claire DeGeorge and Sickle 8-4.
The Argos surrendered their first and only match of the day at court three when Mantilla fell to Haycock 6-1, 6-3. The Argos were quick to recover, and senior Paula Coyos routed Arroyo 6-1, 6-1. Once again, Ines Nicault delivered the clench for the Argos, owning two 6-3 sets to defeat Nina Linke on court two. Both Mixon and Echevarria won in straight sets over their opponents to increase the overall score to 7-1. As an exciting end to a long day, Vlad was able to grind out Seitz in a thrilling 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 showdown.
The Argos will wrap up this Gulf South Conference weekend with a final match tomorrow at 11am central time against the University of West Alabama Tigers at the Vaughn Tennis Complex.
