PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 20th-ranked UWF men's basketball team had six players in double figures and tied the school record for wins in a season with a 97-55 win over Shorter at the UWF Field House Saturday.
Henri Ventoniemi and
Marvin Jones had 14 apiece to lead UWF (20-3, 12-3 Gulf South), which shot 61 percent from the floor and 64 percent on 14-of-22 from outside – both of which established season-highs.
UWF never trailed in the game and led by 13 midway through the first half. Shorter drew to within 12 on a Jonathan Mason layup with 6:28 left in the period. The Hawks didn't score again until 3:16 into the second half. UWF scored 31-consecutive points over a span of 9:44 to stretch the lead to 64-21. That surpassed the previous school-record of 27-straight scored a year ago in a come-from-behind win over West Georgia.
The Argonauts led by 53 with 9:13 remaining in the game. As good as UWF shot the ball in the first 20 minutes – 56 percent – the squad was even better after halftime, converting on 20-of-30 for 67 percent.
UWF made 14-of-22 3-point shots and outrebounded the Hawks 43-22.
DJ Thorpe scored 13 points with three triples and
Rashaan Benson led all players with 10 assists and three steals.
UWF finished with 13 thefts and 27 points off 21 Shorter turnovers. Every starter for the Argos had at least two steals in the game.
Shorter (5-16, 3-12) was led by Jacob Newman's 14 points and three blocks. Leading scorer Amonte Potter was held to a season-low 11 points on 1-of-15 shooting. He came into the contest averaging 19.1 points per game and had scored at least 31 points in his last two contests.
The Argonauts will return to action on Thursday night with a road contest at Auburn-Montgomery (9-14, 5-10). Tip off at the AUM Gymnasium in Montgomery, Ala. is set for 8:00 p.m.
