SAN DIEGO, Cali. – The No. 5 UWF Women's Tennis (11-0) took on the No. 14 UC San Diego (8-6) winning 6-3 at the Northview Courts in San Diego, California on Sunday.
After a rain filled morning, the Argos were able to begin their spring break competition against one of the top ranked Division II teams in the nation. Right out of the gate, UWF displayed their dominance throughout all the doubles matches. On court three, Samantha Echevarria and Diana Vlad pounded past Weight and Nomamooz 8-3. After recovering from an 0-3 deficit, Paula Coyos and Jordana Lujan won eight of the next nine games to add another point toward the overall score. To wrap up the doubles, Ines Nicault and Valeria Mantilla fired multiple volley winners to close out Weil and Hale 8-6 on court two.
The momentum kept rolling for the Argos as they entered into singles play. Diana Vlad eased through the first set 6-2 on court five, but found herself down a break 2-4 in the second. The No. 36 ranked Vlad remained solid under pressure and fired an untouchable overhead winner for a 6-2, 7-5 victory. The No. 14 ranked UC San Diego began to feel the pressure, and each of their players began to pick up their level. On court six, Heather Mixon found herself down a double break 0-4 in the first set. The junior from Louisiana reeled off 12 of the next 14 games against her opponent to secure the win for the Argos. The remaining matches on courts one through four were all fighting in third sets. Senior Lujan squeaked past a red hot Weil 6-7, 6-4, 10-7. The remaining Argos fell in close third sets to their respective opponents.
An exciting, tennis filled weekend awaits the women's tennis team when they return home from California. On Saturday, March 17th, the Argos will have a doubleheader at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. At 9:30am CT, they will face Illinois-Springfield, and at 2:30pm CT, they will compete against a red-hot St. Leo University.
