No. 2 UWF Silences Lee

UWF makes it seventeen straight wins with a 9-0 win over GSC opponent Lee

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The red-hot No. 2 West Florida Women's Tennis Team blanked the Lee University Flames in their Gulf South Conference match-up on a gusty Saturday morning at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex. The Argos have now improved to 6-0 in conference play and 17-0 overall, while the Flames are 4-3 in the GSC and 7-4 overall.

In the doubles, No. 4 pair Jordana Lujan and Paula Coyos reach a seven match winning streak on the top court after pounding past Tondi and Garcia-Nieto without dropping a game. Diana Vlad and Ines Nicault also maintain their perfect 4-0 record on court three after dominating Hardesty and Shennett 8-1. To round up the doubles, Heather Mixon and Samantha Echevarria rallied back from an early 1-3 deficiency to overcome Grzegrzolka and Sickinger 8-4. With this win, the Louisiana-Peru duo earned their first victory together and snapped a three match losing streak playing on court two.

After a commanding 3-0 lead after the doubles, the Argos never surrendered control in the singles. No. 33 Lujan needed only 45 minutes to take down Sickinger on court two, relinquishing just two games in the opening set. After her third consecutive appearance in singles, Bicca produces her third straight clinch for the Argos, powering past Hardesty 6-0, 6-1 on court five. Both Mixon and Echevarria cruised past their opponents on courts three and four without dropping a set. Despite being pushed in the second set, No. 5 Coyos outhit Tondi on court one with a 6-2 6-4 victory. In her second singles match of the season, junior Isabella Calves emerged from a 7-5 back and forth first set battle against Shennett on court six. Calves ran away with the second set, and she concluded the 9-0 sweep of this critical Gulf South Conference match.

The Argos will now pack their bags and hit the road to Columbus, Georgia to take on the No. 12 ranked Columbus State Cougars. Only three days ago, the Cougars took down ?No. 4 Lynn University with a close 5-4 victory. Play is expected to begin at 9am CT at the newly opened John W. Walden Tennis Center.
