Argos Wrap Weekend with Walkoff Win

UWF tallies 13 hits in the win

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 16th-ranked University of West Florida softball team used a three-run seventh inning to win its series finale against Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, capped off with a walkoff single by Rachel Wright. With the 7-6 victory, West Florida improves to 18-11 overall and 9-7 in the Gulf South Conference, while UAH drops to 23-7 and 13-5 in the league.

UWF trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Argonauts quickly cut the UAH lead to 6-5 when Tiona Hill singled to left field on a 3-0 pitch to bring in Meghan Toney, who led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third base.

Kathleen Smiley followed with a double off the wall to put runners on second and third, and Callan Taylor reached for a fourth time in the game by drawing a walk and loading the bases. With the bases juiced, Grace Gilbert lifted a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Sara Spears and Wright singled up the middle to bring in pinch-runner Harley Tagert and take the walkoff win.

Taylor and Gilbert brought in UWF's first runs of the game with third-inning RBI singles to give West Florida a 2-0 lead. UAH bounced back and took a 4-2 lead with a four-run fourth, before Taylor homered for the second time this weekend to bring UWF within a run, at 4-3. The sophomore from Navarre, Florida, finished the weekend with a .667 batting average (6-9), a double, two home runs, seven RBIs and a 1.444 slugging percentage.

After UAH plated another run in the top of the sixth, Mika Garcia hit her first career home run, again cutting the UAH lead to just a single run.

Gilbert earned the win in the circle, improving to 5-2 on the year after throwing 3.1 innings and allowing just four hits and two runs – one of which was earned. She came in relief of Sarah Maloney, who went 3.2 innings and struck out four but allowed four runs. Gilbert also hit .500 (4-8) on the weekend and tallied four RBIs, while going 2-3 with 2 RBIs in the series finale on Sunday.

The Argonauts got multi-hit days from Hill, Smiley, Taylor, Gilbert and Garcia, and Taylor and Gilbert each added two RBIs.

UWF will host West Georgia on Friday and Saturday in a Gulf South Conference series.
